I would like to replace my Acer 292 40Gb hard drive. As the PC is still under warranty I do not want to open it up just yet. Can anyone tell me if it is straightfoward? I'm talking about the physical side of removing and replacing the drive, I can clone the data myself. My only experience of changing a drive was with an old ECS laptop and that was dead easy. What is the Acer like? How far into the case do I have to go? With the ECS, removing one flap was all that was needed.
Thanks and regards,
Chris

Hi Chris,
I am a TM291 owner and I can tell you that the hard drive can be removed easily by a few turns of the screw F3. As far as I know it shouldn't void your warranty. What drive model do you want to replace with?

Thanks Mludwig, just what I wanted to hear. I'll have a look. Not really thought about the replacement yet. Any advice on 60/80Gb, speed versus cost, makes, where to buy etc?
Regards,
Chris -
Sorry, never thought of drive replacement. Therefore, I cannot really give you an advice on current prices. Look around on this forum. Drive replacement has been discussed before.
A little off-topic question: what kind of an optical drive do you have? Could you look up the manufacturer and the model, if you have a dvd burner? -
Replacing the hard drive shold be covered in the manual somewhere. Usually you get into trouble with the warranty if you have to remove the case when upgrading the hard drive. If it is the slide one, you should not have aby problems. Since the notebook is still under warranty, you could give Acer a call to confirm. You are going to a pay a premium for the 7200Rpm drive since it is faster. Whether you need 60 or 80Gb depends on your needs. Seagate is suppossed yo be coming out with some new 7200RPM drives soon with capacities of up to 100Gb. Good Luck.
I know things, things that could get me killed -
Thanks Zazonz,
Judging by how the price of hardware falls, I think I'll wait for 100Gb to become flavour of the month and then buy 80Gb 5,400. As for the manual, it is worryingly vague when it comes to the hard drive. That's why I posted the question on this forum.
Thanks for taking an interest.

Chris
