    Has anyone had to send in their Acer notebook for repairs? I'm pretty sure that I have a hardware problem and will need to send it out. When I had repairs done on my Toshiba, there was a local authorized service center that I was allowed to take my notebook to for repair. Does Acer offer anything similar to that?

    I sent my 8204 in for a screen change. It was because it had the dark corners, but that didn't really bother me. I used that as an excuse because the screen had 3 dead pixels and you need 4 to get a new one i think. Anyway... You can call their tech number and explain the problem. What is it by the way? They, if they see fit that is, will arrange to pick it up with fedex (in my case at least), and fix it then send it back. I had a really painless experience and had my notebook back in a week. Good luck.

    they replace my hdd, cpu, and motherboard with a 2 day turn around.

    they will pick it up with fedex and send it back with fedex.

    very impressive service if you ask me.

    My system keeps locking up on me and sometimes fails to boot. I think it has to do with the RAM slot. What I'll do now is take the RAM out of the first slot and insert it into the second and see if the system still locks up on me. I've tried using a different stick of RAM and it still locked up on me. I've ran memory diagnostic programs and it they seem to check out fine. It seems that it might need a new mainboard.

    What I'm worried about though is that my system came with a 1.73GHz Core Duo and the system is advertised to only include a 1.60GHz CPU. If they replace the mainboard, I'm afraid that they might replace the CPU along with it and downgrade me to a 1.6.

    they don't downgrade it. as long as it is the cpu that was shipped with, they'll just look at the cpu speed and replace it with the same cpu type, of course only in case of a defective.

    This message brought to you, by Disgruntled customer, and the number 45. :D

    Seriously though, let us know what your experience is if you use them, because I am curious (touch wood I won't have to use the service but) also what country you are in, and what level of warranty (three year vs one year vs...) might help others.

    Okay, after testing my system for about a day, I'm pretty sure it's a mainboard fault. After switching the memory from one slot to the other, I have stopped experiencing those brief, intermittent, moments of freezing. Now I just have to start backing up all my files and fined time to contact their tech support.

    grow up ..

    look at the other manufacturers. each manufacturer has it's problems. serie-problems, bad sectors in your harddisk, exploding batteries ^^;

    in fact, u'll never find out how many defective notebooks of which model are being repaired daily, unless you work for that company. judging about acer by saying they're crap is just childish.

    I am a proud owner of an Acer TM 8204. For me, the machine is ace. I did a month worth of research before I purchased this baby. Like deviance says, EVERY mfr has their good and bad batches. I recall that there were a lot of complaints about the earlier versions of 8204. The only complaint I have of Acer is that it takes a lifetime to get through the queuing system here at UK tech support. Other than that, Acer have a worldwide reputation for quality laptops and the ACER 8204 proves that.

    So someone who knows someone asked someone to find out from someone who works at COMET that Acer are less reliable than other notebooks...

    Yes, that's a good pointer to reliability information, I mean it's only 4th hand information from someone who works at Comet... Comet... the UK store like Best Buy, I wouldn't trust them with my computer if every other computer store in the country shut down.

    btw, contrary to what my topic title may imply, I do not think lowly of Acer. Stuff happens regardless of any brand that you get. I just hate having to deal with tier-1-outsourced support for something that I already know the solution for.
