I just got a new Acer Aspire 5734z-4836 and I want to ditch the crapware, do a fresh install of Win7 as described here , and then do a dual boot with Linux Mint.

Ideally I'd like to delete the recovery partition too as it's a waste of perfectly good space, but I've read that if I ever need to send the computer to Acer not having the recovery partion will void the warranty?!?! Or they'll charge extra to reinstall it, or some such nonsense.

I've made the recovery DVDs with the eRecovery program, but will they even work without the recovery partition and/or MBR? When I do a fresh install of Win7 + Linux the MBR will get overwritten thereby nuking the Alt + F10 hook that supposedly starts the recovery program.

    Anyone know?

ps: I haaattteee this recovery BS with a passion! Just give us the #%$#$ CDs you cheap #$!#ers! Sorry for the outburst :) but this makes me mad I have to go thru all this hassle just to use my computer...

    Hi,

what about this: simply replace the HDD by a brand new one and install whatever you want.
The original HDD with the factory preinstall is kept at a safe place just in case it will be needed for warranty claims.

    YES, I feel for you!
    Been there done that!

    To the Question:
As a fact of the matter they have 3 partitions with 2 of them hidden!
If you wipe out the MBR and go to recovery with the DVD's you made, it will let you put the original operating system onto first primary active partition. It will look exactly as your original did --- BUT if you attempt to make backup dvd's again, it won't let you do it, and will tell you that you don't have the original factory specs. Does that make sense?

It took me about 30hrs to get to a decent operating system without the crapware (bloatware.) PITA
The only problem that you will run into is that the mic won't work, you will have to install the "Audio_Realtek_6.0.1.6074_Win7x86x64" sound card software from the Acer website.
That will get it running ok.

Ha ha !!!I hate it even more than you...I installed from the recovery DVD's in a new hd and it went fine....My suggestion is download a copy of win7 from here and do a clean install and forget about the Acer crapware. You will have to make a computerised phone call and give your key to activate....
