If this HDD password is like IBM's HDD/Supervisor password, then generally you are in deep trouble. There's no way to remove a forgotten IBM HDD/Supervisor password without replacing the HDD & Systemboard. Replacing 1 of the 2 items will have the password re-applied to the replaced part. You're probably gonna have to send it into Acer for service, they may be able to remove the password for you (as long as you provide proof you're the owner). One problem is that they may not be able to remove it without wiping the data on the drive.

Just to be precise, the hdd is a Hitachi Travel Star 80GN 4200 rpm, I'll purchaise a 7200 rpm model, that'll be better.

There's no guarantee that the password won't get re-applied to the new HDD. If it's just a HDD password, then you might be fine, but if it's the Supervisor password, then you may be in trouble. You may want to give the new HDD a try and see if it works, but no guarantees.
