I am also considering this notebook. It certainly has a great price and the 9700 card is a plus. I would also appreciate any opionions about this machine. So far, xga looks like the only weakness.

How much RAM? What is the harddrive speed? The models that I have seen in the USA all have 512mb ram and 4200rpm harddrives.

That looks simular to the Aspire 1681WLMi, same specs. I'm thinking about this one, the only down side is 256 mb ram.

TM 3201xci listed with 512mb and standard 4200 drive: http://www.electrodiscounts.com/computer/discr25099.htm

I'm having a hard time deciding. This machine seems to have better ergonomics than others and it doesn't have the obnoxious appearance of the Ferrari (I just don't think I could use that in public without being a target for theft).

There don't seem to be a lot of these units listed, anyone seen one with the multi-drive mentioned on acer's website?

in my country, m'sia, there're no options for a DVD-dual drive...well, even for the aspire 2012, we can't get any model equipped wif a dvd burner..

Others have found out that the 1681 has a vendor typo and does in fact come with 512 MB [ ;)]. The bummer is that the other typo is the bluetooth listed does not come with the machine [V].

Either way, this is a nice widescreen alternative to the 3200, which is hard to find. The 1681 also has the newer folio design (if looks are important). Kinda nice not having the latch to worry about.

Is this the notebook with the latchless screen? Does anyone know how that works? I couldn't imagine that they would simply remove the latch and now it is literally just a screen that opens freely!

From the pictures on acer.com (in their showcase of the folio design) it looks like the 1681 does have latches while the TM3200 is latch-less. Any TM3200/Aspire 1681 owners out their to confirm?

I am in Taiwan for the summer, and luckly, I saw TM3200 in person on 7/28. It was in the computer show. But for now, the supply is still a bit short. Not all retailers has it yet. But it seems like the problem will go away within 2 weeks.

The folio and the curve design is SWWWWEEEEETTTTT. I think Acer copy the latchless design from sony, cuz sony been using it for a while. Is it possible the screen will open freely?? maybe when it get old enough. When I saw it in person, the latchless design work fine. Just like the sony one. At this moment, only TM3200 has latchless design, all others have DUAL latch. I think it's partly due the the size. Only TM3200 is 14", others are all 15" or larger.

The only problem people being discussing is the heat issue. Some pple complain the touch pad has too much heat. Others said the heat is just fine for notebook.

it weight 2.25kg. From my knowledge, it's a really good deal in US market. Consider the weight/performance/price.

Does anyone have any more info on this laptop> Seems like a GREAT price/performance ratio here...

What about the latchless design? Is it bad to have a notebook screen not lock?

Hopefully, this will answer everyone's questions, so here goes.

    1. 512MB ram (2 x 256MB) DDR333
    2. 5400rpm (I believe it was Zmax who got confirmation from Acer)
    3. The 1681WLMi is based on the Folio design, but it does have latches
    4. The 3201XCi is also based on the Folio design, and it does not have any latches
    5. The 1681 & the 4501 is based on the exact same case (color difference) and a user who bought the 4501 (Shr30 I believe) stated that there are latches

I don't think there's anything to worry about with the latchless design. It should be tight enough when closed so you don't accidently open it. It's similar to the design used by Asus in their W1N models.

From what I've read on the Acer site, it uses a magnet to "lock" it. Is anyone else concerned about a magnet being close to computer parts (and my watch, for that matter!)...

Also, it is disconcerting that acer does NOT have any manuals/drivers or even a LINK to the 3200 series on their support site!

Finally, are there volume /mute buttons (dedicated, not some function key)?

There shouldn't be anything to worry about regarding the magnet, just don't place your cedit cards on it and you'll be fine. Just remember, your HDD also has a magnet in it as well. I tore a notebook drive apart once and there's a pretty powerful magnet inside. So, if your HDD is safe with a magnet that close, a magnet in the case shouldn't do anything.

The 3200 is one of their newest series. I don't expect manuals or even drivers to be available probably for the next little bit.

The volume buttons are Fn key based. Should be the Up & Down arrows.
