I got this model that comes with 512 megs of pc2100 ram. Since my bus speed is 400, this means I can replace this ram with pc3200 right? Could someone please tell me what the best ram to get for this travelmate would be? Are they pretty proprietary, or is notebook DDR-SDRAM pretty universal?

    Thanks!

PS....Can I replace the hd on this thing too with one of those fancy Hitachi laptop 7200 rpm 8meg buffer hard drives?

In my opinion, most ram in the notebooks currently on the market that have DDR ram should be standard throughout. So, you should be able to put standard DDR ram into your unit (someone please correct me if I'm wrong). Best thing to do is check with Acer Support just to be safe.

You should also be able to replace the HDD on your unit. The Hitachi drive is a 9.5mm Slim drive so the dimensions should fit fine. You just need to findout how to remove your old one and you should be set.

FYI...The 7200rpom drive do get warmer than the stock 4200rpm drives that come with most notebooks & will also use more battery power.

thanks for the reply. i have heard people claim that the 7200 has no effect on battery life, i didn't quite believe that when i read it. im sure the battery life is great on my computer if i'd only use the touchpad, but frankly, i HATE touchpads. so i always use a usb mouse, which jacks my cpu speed to the max all the time 24-7, which his 1402 mhz. (just using touchpad, typing a word document would lower my speed to around 40mhz) i can definately see the power saving there! but one the usb mouse is plugged in, im at half battery capacity or lower before ya even know it.

Faster hard drives don't use any more power, so don't worry about that. Numerous places have run the tests and all conclude there is no negative battery effect.

As long as long can access the slot most So-DIM should work, but nothing is guaranteed. Just ask some eMachines owners. I also doubt faster RAM will have any effect. It will most likely be clocked down. Having PC3200 may be more stable however when clocked down.

would a ps/2 mouse drain the battery as fast as this usb one? also, is it safe to plug/unplug ps2 devices while the machine is running?

    thanks
