    Hi,

I've narrowed my notebook search down to the following:

    ASUS UL50v:
    Core 2 Duo ULV SU7300 Processor 1.3GHz, 4GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce G210M

    Acer Timeline X 5820T:
    Core i5-430M 2.27GHz, 4GB RAM, ATI RADEON HD 5650

I know the Acer has a far superior CPU to the Asus, but I've just read that the Acer's discrete graphics can only kick in when it's plugged in. I work quite a lot in cafes etc (using photoshop and AutoCAD 2D/ 3D), so my question is- even using just the integrated graphics would the Acer STILL be more powerful than the Asus, which can (I beleive) access it's graphics card when unplugged.

Just so you know, here are my requirements (and how I came to these two):

    15+ screen
Much thinner and lighter than the average 15inch
    Discrete graphics (for Photoshop/ AutoCAD)
    Optical drive

    Thanks, C

False. You can enable the ATI GPU anytime you want, plugged in or not.
Most likely. The programs you mentioned are more CPU intensive than GPU.
Acer all the way, but the Asus isn't a bad choice either.

The 5820T does not have a discrete video card (HD 5650). It only has the Intel GMA HD.

The 5820TG does have the HD 5650 with switchable graphics.

Thanks guys, both those posts are really helpful (I'll opt for the Acer)

    Cheers, C
