I have an Acer 5051, and for the last few weeks, I get a hell a lot of vibration from this laptop. It mainly happens after it has booted into windows, usually if I'm using the internet or just editing documents. The vibration is quite loud and its a grinding noise as well, makes me wonder if a HDD failure is imminent. I'm getting no errors in Windows, and as far as I can see, theres no unusual amount of load on the CPU.
This happens both when using battery or mains power, and the noise gets so bad, it feels like a rocket taking off or a train starting, its really that bad. The laptop is 10 months old, so still within warranty, I'll see what Acer have to say, but I was wondering if this is a common fault on Acer machines?

Maybe the cooling fan has thrown a bearing.....Check if your processor is overheating. Use Notebook Hardware Control to check.

Thank TeeJay, that makes sense, as the fault is now intermittent rather than constant. Theres no overheating.
Big raspberry to Acer UK support, 5 days to answer my query, then they say my postcode is not valid. Clowns. -
to see if your HDD could be the culprit, I would go to the manufacturers (the HDD's) website and download their diagnostics utility and check to see what it says. I'm not sure if mobile HDD's have SMART status or not (I actually didn't see anything my 5920G's BIOS when I was in there, but it was only a brief look thru) but seeing what the SMART report is, may be helpful. the diagnostic utility will do that. there's also a third party diagnostic utility out there what checks everything itself and it's compatible with most drives...note it's only a demo tho.
the other big culprit would be your optical drive, which does spin up during boot into windows, whether it has a disc in it or not. if it has a disc in it tho and the something is loose and allows for jitter in the drive plate, it would definitely cause shuddering.
aside from your UK Acer support, being the laptop is new, I would call up the tech support from the store you bought it at. they should give you some help or ask you to bring it back in as they should cover you for the 1 year limited warranty (and send it in to Acer for big work, if necessary). -
Credit to Acer UK, they seemed to have redeemed themselves, it was a bearing problem in the cooling fan, so that was replaced, and FRUS replaced. The whole repair only took 3 days, so that plus delivery, 6 days all in (includes the weekend, couriers don't do weekends round here!)
