    Hi guys,

I have an Acer 8935g running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit with 4GB of Ram. Would I be able to add any more memory than 4gb or is this the maximum? Also I have the Intel Q9000 and ATi 4670 1gb graphics card. Would I be able to upgrade these and if so what would you guys recoomend? Would the icore range work on my laptop?

    Cheers
    H :D

You could have looked on Acer's support page for the specifications of the Aspire 8935G, and it would have told you that 4GB is the limit.
You can swap your Core 2 Quad Q9000 for a slightly faster quad-core (Q9100 at 2.26 GHz) or a faster dual-core (T9600 or higher), but you're spending too much money for not enough benefit.
Same for the ATi Radeon HD 4670 - it's currently the best available for your machine until the Radeon HD 5000 Series trickle into eBay, or unless the GeForce GTS 250M from the 8940G is compatible. MXM upgrades are always tricky business when changing to cards not sold with your model.

The Core i3s, i5s, and i7s use a different socket and chipset, and thus are incompatible.

Possibly, or that Acer doesn't support upgrades beyond 4GB. No one's been daring enough to try, I'm guessing?

Since you don't know a lot about BIOS, no, there is no way to remove that limit. It would require extensive knowledge about the way BIOS is implemented and how chip-set works. If you could, you wouldn't be asking this question. You can always hope that some engineer with lots of free time on his hands will attempt to make a hack. Remember, search engines are your friends when it comes to things like this.

i've check the motherboard of the acer 8935 with Everest and it tells me the maximum amount of memory is 8 GB.
i also suggest that before you want to make your move to get more RAM, call the Acer center and ask them if you could add more memory. they won't be able to answer on the spot, but if you will provide them an e-mail they might help you in 2-3 days.

The AS 8940G supports up to 8 gig of ram. It's just that no one has them in the USA to sale.

Topic is about 8935G, not 8940G. Different notebooks, different chipsets.

Hi guys, I contacted Acer as suggested and below was there official response.

'Thank you for contacting Acer UK. We apologize for the delay in the response of the E-mail.

Regarding your issue we understand your concern.

How ever you will not be able to upgrade to 8 GB memory and the maximum memory would be 2 to 3 GB since your operating system is 32 bit version.

If you want to upgrade to 8 GB memory your operating system should be a 64 bit version.

If you have any further query we would request you to please E-mail us or contact our Acer Technical Support Line at : 0871 760 1000.

We appreciate your interest for sending us e-mail and will be glad to assist you further to the extent possible.

    Thank you,

    Respectfully,
    Acer UK
    Online Technical Support.'

So based on their response I would say 8GB on the 8935G is possible? I am running on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

Edit: Maybe they list 4GB as the max as the OS they provide or which is widely provided with this machine are all 32bit versions and obviously the max on these OS would be 4GB?

    Cheers

hmoodie, I'd just chalk it up to the fact that Acer Tech Support is far from the best on the planet.
As someone who's worked in customer support for a computer manufacturer before (hint: starts with an "L", ends in "enovo"), this reads like a copy-paste response, with "8" replacing "4".

Again, the only way to know for sure is to test. Try getting a 4GB module (just one) and inserting that. If the system can run on 6GB, 8GB should also be possible.

I was thinking this was a copy and paste effort. Thats why I posted here to see if you guys agreed with me or Acer on this and you have confirmed my thoughts. I will try a 4GB module with one of my existing 2GB modules to see if this works. I will post my results if you guys like.

    Cheers

    Hey Folks,

Dont know if anybody tried upgrading the ram of the 8935G to more than 4gb.
I will try this in the next few days. i have a 8935G and will try and put 2 4gb soDIMM in it and see what this does. My colleague has the 8940 laptop with 8gb ram and these have the same memory modules than the 8935. So i wil try and swap these and see if it works.

    Will post the results.

    Regards,

    Jimmy

    Hey,

Ok i tried the memory thingy and it works. I tried 2 combinations.
The first one was with 1 sodimm of 2gb and 1 of 4 gb and this worked perfect.
The second one was with 2 sodimm of 4gb and this also worked perfect.

So it is really no problem for the laptop to handle the 8gb. did not try it with more but when this happens i will also post my results.

I also upgraded the primary hdd to a solid state and this score's a whopping 7.7 in windows 7. My old ram scored a 5.9 and now with this 8gb it scores a 7.3.

I can really recommend the upgrade, it makes everything a lot smoother.

Hope this was a bit helpfull.

    Kind regards,
    Jimmy

I have 8940 laptop with 8gb ram and these have the same memory modules than the 8935.I think 4GB is enough for the Acer 8935.But I think that before you want to make your move to get more RAM call the Acer center and ask them if you could add more memory.

Think for most people 4 gb will be enough since it has 32bit windows but we use autocad on these laptops under a 64bit windows so the more mem the better. And i know, i also have the 8940 model and tried swapping these before buying the new ram. it works perfect. got the 8935G running on 8gb now and it scores a 6.9 on the memory now under win7 x6x4 pro. before with the 4gb it was only 5.9 so it really is an improvement.

    Jimmy

    Hi Jimmy,

This has been a great help mate. I have a few questions if you don't mind.

    1. What SSD did you buy for it? How easy was it to install/fit and setup?

    2. What speed was the memory you tested as I'd like to get my memory score up :D :D.

    Thanks again
    H :D

Do you mean call them and ask them if the system would recognise it or work with it? I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit so it should hopefully work.

If you have the money then go for the upgrade to 8GB, but you won't notice a difference in day to day programs. My desktop performs identically to my laptop with 3GB, except when I run large memory intensive applications such as MATLAB and AutoCAD. If you do upgrade, just remember memory speed is a marketing gimmick and makes no difference at all, in any situation. And it will be fine under the 8935/8940 with Win 7 64-bit.

SSDs are very easy to install, just like putting in another HDD.

Hi, thanks for this information. Just to clarify though if I buy DDR3 1066mhz it will perform exactly the same as 1333mhz? If so this is a good piece of information and will help save on cost.

I bought an intel X-25M 160gb SSD and installation was very easy.

The memory i use now are 2x 4GB DDR3 PC3-8500F (533mhz) these are the same specs like the original memory modules only in 4gb. And these score a 7.3 in the windows 7 score index.

    hope this helps a bit.

    Thanks ,

I'll have to try 2 x 4GB myself , just been waiting for someone to try it first ;-) (for some reason I dont get any email notification when someone posts on the thread).

Good call on the solid state drive, shame they are still expensive at the moment.

    I bought a set of 2 4GB DDR3 1066Mhz Cl7 SO-Dimm's. (Corsair CM3X8GSD Kit)
Whatever combination I try, one 4GB module, two 4GB module's, one 2GB and one 4GB module, nothing works.
It obviously has nothing to do with Windows (I'm running W7 64bit), since it never even shows the bios screen. So I assume that my motherboard (with Bios 3210) is unable to control (these?) 4GB modules. Pity.

You might need to up the voltage to the memory slots a bit. Check what the voltage is set at in the BIOS and what the new modules require.

Thanks for your reaction, however I can't find a way to change (or check) the memory slot voltage. Is there a 'hidden' menu in the BIOS that I didn't find?

    No,

    you can't change these parameters.
Such settings are usually available on desktop motherboards with overclocking capabilities.

If your new memory modules do not work, they are either defective or incompatible. Back to vendor if possible.

    Thank you.
Does that mean that you are certain that my laptop should be able to handle 8GB?
By now the memory modules are working without problem in a friend's computer, so they appear not to be defective.
Any suggestions what brand/type may be compatible?

hello dear acer 8935g owners, i just recently got myself one of these, it seems very good for what i need it for,.

    the specs are :
    win7 ultimate 64bit
    intel core 2 extreme X9100 @ 3.06GHz 3.07GHz
    4GB RAM
    ATI 4670 HD 1GB DDR3
    2 x samsung spinpoint 500gb hdds = 1tb space 7200rpm

and from what i hear you can upgrade the ram of this machine to 8gb?!
i was searching all the net to find out if its possible and i see some of you guys have done it.

i called acer, and its just some stupid indian girl who doesnt know anything on the other end, so they are no help about upgrades.

what i want to know, is whats the maximum speed of the ram possible , i know "5er driver" has got his ram up to 2x4GB =8GB at 1066MHz, but can you install up to 1600MHz or more? or is 1066MHz the limit for this machine?

I gave it another go, and fitted 2 Kingston KVR1333D3S9/4G modules (1333mhz!), and this time everything seems to work fine. Not sure if they run at their maximum speed, but my Windows memory rating jumped from 5,9 to 7,0.
After installing the SSD, the RAM was the slowest part of my Windows index, which now stands at 6,7 limited by the graphics.
