    Hi guys,

Sorry of this has been posted elsewhere and Ive not seen what I need.

I recently bought the above laptop, and its great.
However, I didnt get any reinstallation disks with it, and when I enquired I was told that with vista machines, you make them yourself of buy them from the supplier ( www.laptopsdirect.co.uk). Apparently they are on hidden drives or files and I can put them on disk for myself.

Im new to Vista and have no idea how to do this. Can someone give me some idea how to do this please?
I would prefer not to wait til I HAVE to do it.

    Thanks in advance :)

Burning your recovery DVD's is the very first thing you should do with your new laptop. In the old days you got recovery CD's along with your computer. Now they've all gone to this new, cheaper, method of just tossing all the data onto a partition on the drive and letting you figure it out.
I think it's sleazy but they didn't ask me.
I don't remember the steps exactly, and Acer doesn't even make it as obvious as it should be, but if you go into Empowerment>Recovery and poke around a little you'll find something about "Make recovery discs". The utility will only run one time. Once you've made your set of discs the utility turns itself off. So use good quality DVD-R, not RW, and store them out of the sunlight in a safe place.

If you manage to do this could yo do me a copy. I also have a 5920G (also from laptops direct as it happens) but was unable to create the recovery discs myself (faulty dvd drive). Acer were supposed to send some out when they returned my laptop but never did. Now they say it will cost me for them.

Listen to the advice about the PQSERVICE partition and don't install a clean copy of Vista. I did that and it ruined the hidden partition. Now I have no hidden partition and now recovery discs.

In a word - f****d unless I pay Acer for something they said they would do for nothing.

Edit: I should have mentioned, if you are happy to do me a copy, I'll send disks & postage etc. Hell, if you live in Manchester I'll buy you a beer!

I'm in Scotland too- any chances of getting a copy of those disks? I didn't realise I had to burn them, and it's been a month since I got my laptop, so I've installed everything possible on it. :/

If you haven't deleted your hidden partition (as I had) then you should be able to burn them yourself using the Acer tool. The tool creates the disks from the hidden partition, not from your actual Windows installation so it doesn't matter when you do it.

You can restore your PC to it's original state using the hidden partition without the need for the disks - the disks are just useful as a backup in case there is a major FU.

Oh good good, thanks! This wasn't made clear in the manual =)

Assuming you have a 5920G - does your HD DVD read HDs? Mine doesn't, and I'm not sure whether to update firmware or not.. think restoring original installation will help?

    =)

I have a 5920G but mine only has the DVD drive, not HD-DVD. I bought one of the early Gemstones as they came out. The first batch to hit the UK came without BlueTooth (I didn't see that until after I'd bought it) and no HD-DVD. My version has the 1Gb Turbo Ram instead.

Stupid question - you defo have the HD-DVD model don't you ;)

If you have and thye don't read you might have a fault - not unsurprising with an Acer it seems. I've had mine back for repairs twice in the first 7 months and I don't abuse it.

Yeah - posted a topic with detailed symptoms, used to read but now can't! How did you find customer services? Any reccomendations? Do they take the whole product or d'you think I'd just be able to send in the drive? Etc.. =) Thanks for your help this early in the morning!
