i was writing a reply on a social network when my laptop suddenly switched off (i am now on the slowest pc in the world).

When i switched it back on the power light came on the fan started for about a few seconds and stopped the h/d light flashed for about a second and nothing, the power light stayed on.

starting it again a few times and it was either the same as above or it would completely switch off (power light off as well) or no fan noise and power down or different combination of the above.

i decided to check the h/d (hard disk) so i took it out and put it in a 'docking station' and connected it to my 'desktop' pc, i was able to browse this h/d so i am assuming the h/d is ok.

the only other thing that happened (for the first time) before this happened (i dont know if its connected) was that i was watching a video on .'youtube' and moved the 'seek slider' below the video to about half way and the video picture went strange all blurry and streaky lines (this happens about 50% of the time) but this time i had 'the' blue screen telling me 'windows is shutting down to protect my system' (or words to that effect) but my pc started back up after this, this was about 2 days before this problem.

i have an Acer Aspire 5742 laptop, Intel core i3 processor, 6gb memory(upgraded) and 'on board' Intel graphics (i dont know why but i think this graphic chip might be the problem)

so its like the power is getting to the h/d and fan for a second and thats it, but sometimes the power light stays on.

any advice would be great, thanks.

That YouTube thing definitely sounds like a GPU issue. Do you still have warranty left on your unit?

    thank you for the advice

problem solved but only by chance.

this laptop had 3gb of memory when i bought it (1x2gb and 1x1gb)about 3 months ago i bought a memory strip that was 4gb and replaced the 1gb with it so now had 6gb of memory in all.

thinking this laptop had to be taken back to where i bought it, i put back in the original 1gb and took out the 4gb and just by chance pressed the 'on' button and hey presto it came on (im using it now)on closer look at the 4gb memory i noticed one of the black squares was darker than all the rest, who would have thought it, this memory worked fine and then all of a sudden caused my laptop to close down.

    thanks again for your replies
