My 5740 randomly turned off and I took it to the Geek Squad at Best Buy and they said it's probably a motherboard issue. They said its $500-600 to fix it. I was wondering if you guys think anything else could be wrong, and if not is that a good price?

It's not much to go by so I don't see how can we come up with a reasonable diagnosis based on this info.

The price is ridiculous though- 5740 mobos cost between $150 and $200 on eBay so even if it is a dead mobo it can be replaced for far less than what BB guys told you.

I had a similar problem with a Dell laptop, and the warranty covered the change the motherboard.

What kind of info would be more helpful? And unfortunately its 3 years old, and out of warranty.

Is the light on the notebook on?
Is the light on the power supply on?

Have you tried running it on battery?
What happens if you remove the battery and run it only of PSU?

Does it stay completely dead or does something happen- i.e. fan starts for a second or optical drive spins up or anything like that.

My point was that it's hard to guess without testing different possibilities.

If it does turn on, maybe it's been overheating.

Is the light on the notebook on? The only light that turns on is a yellow light near the mouse pad, showing its getting power. But usually this light is blue, and it was blue even after this happened for a couple days. Also there should be another light that turns on right next to the place where you put in the charger, that does not light up, although it did light up once, and the laptop wouldn't start up. After unplugging and plunging back in the charger the light stayed off.

Is the light on the power supply on? Yes, the green light on the charger stays on the whole time.

Have you tried running it on battery? Yes, two of them, my older one and a newer one we got about 4 months ago, nothing happens, it was on battery when it turned off.

What happens if you remove the battery and run it only of PSU? The same exact thing that happens when there is a battery, as if there was no change.

Does it stay completely dead or does something happen-It stays completely dead besides the little yellow light.

As for the overheating possibly, the laptop did heat up a lot, and quickly, so is it possible that the motherboard overheated?
