I got it awhile back and it works pretty fine, it still got rather warm. And, now, whenever it gets too warm, it overheats and shuts off.

Took a can of compressed air to it, found A LOT of dust inside of it, cleaned it out, and, it still overheats. For some reason I found a bunch of foil and sponge blocking a lot of the way for the fan and other exhausts to keep the laptop cool, and, I'm not sure if I should remove them or not completely. (I removed the ones blocking the inside of the fan, so now it's actually RUNNING AND WORKING, as I can hear it now.)

    Mind helpin' me here?

    Thanks.

I have a 5684 WLMi. Same family as the 5680.

I cleaned mine out after six months of ownership and also found LOTS of foreign stuff in there. I gently removed the fan and dusted the lappie with a combination of a soft paintbrush, vacuum cleaner and good sense.

I have made a habit of cleaning ANY debris out there every six months religiously. Result: A lappie that still runs like a dream after close to 2 years now...

You must hear the fan cycling up and down (quitlely) on a 5680 series and you know all is well.

Probably one of the best lappies Acer ever built.

Keeping the internals dust and debris free is the key to a long life.

    Cheers,
    Theo
