My Acer Aspire 5570Z is rated at 2.1, very slow. What can I do to speed it up? How can I stop the mouse from engaging automatically when it stops on an icon?

Which element of the rating is the lowest? That's the one that determines the overall rating. Graphics and CPU can't really be changed. Memory can be upgraded. If Vista is performing poorly for you, turn off all the optional graphics eye-candy. In extreme cases, reverting to XP can help turn a marginal Vista computer into a competent XP system.

I'm not sure about your second question. There's a mouse control panel that will let you change many aspects of the touch-pad's behavior; check those settings to see if you can get it working the way you want.

The memory upgrade suggestion that RDClark is good. A memory upgrade can do alot for systems with Windows Vista installed. Another upgrade you may want to consider is installing a faster hard disk, which can help with general system responsiveness and start up time if the computer.

What do you mean by optional graphics eyecandy? How hard would it be to switch from vista to xp? This is all new to me.

"Optional Eye candy" is Windows Vista's Aero effect. It has some transparrent windows and start menus. Transferring to Windows XP, would require a Windows license and a Windows disc.
