    Hello everybody,

A few days ago I bought an Acer Aspire 5542 ( AMD Turion II X2 M500) with Windows 7 .

The software on the laptop is running very smoth because the Aspire 5542 is coming with Windows 7 64 bit.

The problem it's just one: the fan is a bit noise and is permanently ON(when the laptop is idle also ....)(the same situation like for Timeline Series)

Someone of you had the same laptop with the same problem !?
Someone have a service manual for this new model(Aspire 5542)? Is it posible to buy one(service manual) from somewhere? I want to try to open the chassis to seen the fan, and to try to solve this problem....If someone already do it first please post some pictures!

If some one can help me with some stuff to fix the FAN NOISE problem, please help!
    Thanks!

Can you download & run HWMonitor?
Acer Laptop runs the fan when certain Temperature Threshold is reached.
I can only suggest undervolting using K10STAT and Undervolting the GPU

The temperature is around 45 Celsius. And the bottom of laptop is not hot!
The fan is not stoping when I am using just yahoo messenger ....and this is not normal.

Can you post a link please, about K10STAT .... I don' t know what mean this! Does't have sens to undervolt the GPU ....(is from video card ?????) maybe the CPU !?

Can I have a link ...for a software or some HowTo for undervolting.
    Thanks

    Undervolting guide here
Can you post screenshot of HWMonitor and run some CPU and GPU intensive software as well showing the temperatures?
Btw because Turion II is a new processor can you do us a favour and get more information regarding the processor?
Download CPUZ and post screen shot of the CPU details.
Download HWMonitor and Post the temperature screenshot while running a CPU intensive program like Intel Burn In.

These will provide those seeking more info about the new Processor the necessary information to consider purchase.
    Thank you.

So I tried to undervolt the CPU(to reduce de noise of the FAN)....

The CPU that I have: AMD Turion II x2 M500 is working with K10STAT(it seems to work) but unfortunatelly for me I didn't find the right value for the 5 P-State(P0, P1,P2,P3,P4,P5).... For exemple with some value(0,8250 , 0,8125 , 0,800, 0,7875 , 0,7750) the laptop is restaring, and with some value does't happen anything !!

Can I have an ideea from someone with more experience ... because I am not sure that I applied the HowTo like described in article!!

Some pictures to understand better the details of my CPU(CPUZ,K10STAT,INtelBURN, HWmonitor):

1 - the genuine Voltage of CPU

2 -IntelTest (the MAX temperature reached was 58 degrease Celsius)

3 - And hear probable I have to do all the work !!!

For example: to be sure that I understud corect wich value I have to change - can someoane gave me an example for ALL (for EACH) value wich will be changed.

For example I tried for P0, P1,P2,P3,P4,P5 the next value: (0,8250 , 0,8125 , 0,800, 0,7875 , 0,7750) but the laptop was restarted. Probabily the value are to small (the original voltage is 0.850 - see photo 1). I tried with bigger value but didn't happen anything !

So my question is: I have to modify just the value number 2(with red) from the image or 1,2,3(red numbers - see the image) also !!!!?????
So wich value I have to modify exactlly(see the image to understand better what I mean)?

    http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r213/bogdanghebea/Capture1.png

PS: If after I changed some value the laptop was restarted itself, so I think that this CPU (AMD TURION II X2 M500) can be undervolted so this is sure!!

Please HELP from someone with more exeperience!

    Thanks

I have head that there is a fan control option in W7 power mangment , just create an new power plan, it should be one of the option, never tried it so i dont know if it will work.

Yes, in windows 7 is it that option - something like "cooling processor..." "active" or "passive" but nothing .... I switch on Power Save also but nothing -the FAN is ON forever! So the last chance is to undervolt the CPU .... I need some more help for this!

    Relax don't panic.
Firstly you are able to set the voltages?
According to K10STAT you have 5 Pstates.
    To set the Voltages,
Select the option button for P4 then select the drop downbox to choose the lower voltage then click Apply
You should see the new Voltage show in CPUZ.
    There are P0 to P4
P0 refers to full power while P4 refers to idle while the rest is in between
For every voltage you set use Intel Burn in to test for stability.
Anyway M500 (Caspian) is amazing compared to Griffin the max temperature is very low...
    Really worth considering for purchase.

For p4 (so for idle) the lower voltage in the box is 0.0125, I selected but the laptop was restarted itself ! Which voltage I have to choose because there are about 10-20 voltages ...!!!???

This is the reason for witch I want to undervolt it: is not very hot, but the fan is ON forever ...

    I am testing right now.
The minimum voltage it seems to pe 0.7125 at 0.700(laptop is restarting BSOD).
So I selected 0.7125 I tested with CPUZ and IntelBurn and is ok.(for P4)

NOW for P3 the value in the box are ..... 0.7125, 0.7250, 0.7375, 0.7500 ....etc

    Probablly I have to select 0.7250 V (next value after P4 value ....) ?????

I select and I tested with IntelBurn next value for each P-state:
    p0 - 0.9125
    p1 - 0.9000
    p2 - 0.8875
    p3 - 0.8000
    p4 - 0.7125

After each one voltage(P-state) i press Apply and i run IntelBurn ....it seems to be ok !

Just one think: the fan noise is the same and also the temperature ..... why? i missed to do domething !!!???

One more thing: I didn't modified(changed) any other paratemer ...just voltages ....
    Some ideea??!

Probably more of a BIOS bug than anything else, they probably haven't programmed their fan control correctly yet. Since it's a new model, this sort of thing is pretty common.

This is not the correct way to test for stability
    1) You must right click on the taskbar icon and select Clock Control on
Then K10STAT will take over control of CPU Clock (aka Pstate)
2)Click on the Frequency button, if you have done 1) it will switch to the frequency you clicked on
    3)Then run Intel Burn In
4)Repeat for each pstate you have set
5)Make sure Intel Burn in says ok after each test then decrease the voltage slowly
There will be a stage where it will say it is not stable or suddenly BSOD
That will be the limit so set the final value to the value before it looses stability that will be the CPU limit you have.
Is there a temperature which the fan turns off ?

First you need to enable Clock Control so K10STAT will take over frequency control from the Windows OS.
For example using that picture if you want to set the CPU to 800MHZ click on the two buttons beside P4 then Apply.
The 2 auto buttons (4) will unselect and the CPU will immediately switch to 800MHZ and will remain at that frequency until you depress the 2 auto buttons (4) and reapply.
The same applies for other frequencies/Pstate.
This is how you control the frequency you want it to run.

First of all thanks for your patience! For the moment I am not home so I can't try. I will read again your HowTo first to apply all. So for p0 for example : I have to: 1. Select the voltage 2. Enable clock control from sys tray 3 . Press the 2 buttons(frequency) 4. press Apply and test with intelburn! Please corect me if I missed something!

Exactlly, the problem is on the BIOS. I know that, but is not any other new version for this BIOS(is a new model of laptop/CPU also) for the moment....

The fan is programmed properly bad.
At 48 degrease Celcius is starting and is not stoping until the CPU is not reach 42-43 degreese again ....
So with the undervolting I am trying keep the CPU under 48-49 degreese. In generally for general tasking like(messenger, browser, etc) this CPU is running at 48-49 degreese(temperature) .... but it's never come back to 42-43 degreese when the fan it should stop .....

Regarding the undervolting: this night and a few hours this morning I tested some voltage for each P-state(P0....P4). Obviously the values that I fount are better(lower) than original value .....but in all the tests that I have done I didn't notice any modification regarding the FAN ....

Again, the steps that I fallowed are described shortly in next image

    http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r213/bogdanghebea/Capture4.png

For the moment nothing more. Probablly I am still missing something, so if someoane have some other idee just write it hear !

Go to AMD forum and ask or contact ACER. Your system is not functioning properly and you have every right to have a working product.

Just make a case to Acer I am sure they will update the BIOS releases since it is a new model.
Anyway you should have notice more power savings with undervolting so all your effort isn't wasted.

You can try using the feedback form on Acer Site.
You can also call them, if you ask them for a fix it is impossible for them to give it to you immediately.
Instead tell them to feedback to the BIOS programmer for the issue to be solved.

I fallowed this steps from the guide but when I am opening DSDT.asl with notebook the file is EMPTY ....

    Why??? any iddeea?

    (steps that i fallowed)
Run command prompt using “Run as Administrator” and type the following:
    a. cd C:\ACPI
    b. copy dsdt.aml dsdtorig.aml (Creates a backup)
    c. asl /u dsdt.aml
    7. If everything went fine, a new file named dsdt.ASL should be created in C:\ACPI
    8. Open dsdt.ASL in notebook. It should look like a software code

AND in the run command box(opened with run as administrator) i read this message after i fallowed the steps above:

asl_ERR: UnAsmFile: failed to read description header block

    why???

You could have just zipped the file and attached it to your post. Or renamed it to dsdt.txt and attached it like I did to this post.

I looked through the whole file, to me it looks like there is no fan code.

I looked in the TZ scope and there was no active cooling code.

Sorry I dont think this method will work for you.

    I figured as well.
I find that the new DSDT from cantiga and my MCP77 onwards there are no fan codes.
I think I leave this to the BIOS Programmers since it is rather new (They have a reason to continue improving the BIOS) I am confident new BIOS updates will fix them soon.
You just need to update them about the issues.
Only EOL models with issues need to be worked on.

1080tray is not working also .... I already try it.
So nothing to do for the moment....I am looking for an service manual to open the laptop chassis, because I want to clean the thermal paste and to put some thermal paste more eficient!

    Good Call.
I was about to suggest that to you.
I like people who learn fast and are flexible to problem solving with multiple approaches.
Actually you can also try A1CTL (AspireOne Control) but I don't like fan speed hacks.
The best solution should be 1)Reduce fan spin by dropping thermal output.

Just for knowledge, but I dealt with a an acer 5536g with an athlon ql-64 and the fan was spinning fast and always on. That's defnitely a bios problem.

Sorry.. my english is not very good and some time I am a bit confused ... what mean "....by dropping thermal output" ?

You mean to change the thermal paste with a better one?

yep a better thermal paste should move heat from the CPU to the fan sink faster than the CPU temperature can rise. Therefore the CPU temperature will not rise as much
