My acer laptop was going very slow and laggy so i decided to install my mates Windows Vista Ultimate disc and overwrite my hard drives for a clean installation, however once this was done it loaded up fine and onto the desktop, Then it automatically shut down and when i next tried to reboot it comes up with this error message

    ACPI
    VISTA LOADER 2,1,2

    DONE
    FIND SET ROOT BOOTMGR

    ERROR 17 FILE NOT FOUND
    BOOTING WINDOWS NT-2000-XP

    FALL BACK 2
    FIND SET ROOT-NTDLR

    ERROR 17 FILE NOT FOUND
    BOOTING ENTER COMMAND LINE

BOOT FAILED PRESS ANY KEY TO ENTER COMMAND LINE.
    press any key
MINIMAL BASK LIKE LINE EDITING IS SUPPORTED. PRESS TAB .......

I have tried a few tutoriasls on the internet

    - Have tried the command line prompts which i cannot get to work
    - Downloaded and created a bootable windows vista recovery cd 32 bit which also wudnt even boot on start up

Have went and emailed acer there as my notebook is still under warranty, wasn't sure how long they take to reply so thought i would come onto here for some advice

Thanks and hope someone can help.

It came with vista home basic preinstalled on it and i did not get any disc with it hence the reason i borrowed my mates as he said it would work, It has a vista basic ceritficaye on it.

what do you recommend i do now ? i am totally puzzled with this i even tried the Acer recovery console which i couldn't get to work as i overwrited all the data, also for some reason it wont let me enter the BIOS menu when i press F 12. cheers for any help, i really dont have a clue with computers...

F2 to enter bios. It even says that on the bottom of the Acer splash screen when you are booting up. Did you specifically delete the PQSERVICE partition when you tried to wipe the drive?

You probably still have the recovery partition then. You just overwrote your MBR with a standard Vista one which broke the recovery mechanism. Didn't you burn your recovery disks when you first started using the computer? Then you could just use them to recover with.

No thats the problem i didnt burn the recovery file as i didnt even know about it until now, might be easier just handing it into a local pc shop!

You could fix it if you can get a basic install of vista loaded. Once you have a vista installation you can boot into, you can fix your MBR and re-enable the recovery partition, provided it is still there.

EDIT: Here are some instructions on how to repair the MBR. http://ezinearticles.com/?How-to-Repair-the-Acer-D2D-Recovery&id=794500 If you get it to work, you should be able to use the recovery partition to restore your system to factory default. Then you should be able to burn some recovery discs for backup.

Dude, read down a little further. :err:

If you can't even get into the bios, maybe you should have somebody else look at it. You do not need to hold the F2 button down. You should just be able to hit it once when the white splash screen is up to enter the bios. You may have other issues if you can't even do that.

rigth finally got the f2 to work, i seemed to be holding it down instead of just pressing it immediately

do any of you guys know how to set it to boot automatically from the Vista disc

i was thinking boot priority but thought i would ask before i anything else up

EDIT: used F12 to boot from disc

    thanks

If you make your recovery dvd, you can use that on the new hard drive. But I think you will still need to format your new hard drive first. If you just use the recovery dvd, it will not recreate the recovery partition on the new drive. I cloned my old hard drive onto my new hard drive so my recovery partition was cloned over as well.

it shound be f12 to bring up boot menu

    f2 shound be enter setup
right after hit power botton hit f2 it shound bring into bios then go make sure d2d is enable and press f12 for boot menu is turned

see how you can start the vista setup do repair computer option before you get go to run setup

then you can get command prompt

you can run diskpart to make recovery partion active

at startup repair do command prompt

    run diskpart

    do sel disk 0

    then do list part

    thye be one called esia

do sel part the number partion

type active to set it bootable reboot it shound go into acer ercovery if partion is not damaged

Yes, it will just put your system back to Vista Home Basic with your Acer software included. What exactly do you mean by the code not working for the command prompt?

Those won't recover the Acer MBR. You would need to use the instructions in the link I posted earlier to recover the Acer MBR. 3 more posts and I can send you a PM.
