Acer Aspire 5040 Wireless Button

To anybody that has this notebook: Does the Wireless Enable/Disable button work?

I really like the machine so far, I've got it from Office Depot.

Here are the specs of the machine:

I have the same lappy as you (with a few different specs) and I haven't had any problems with my wireless button. Can you be more specific with your problem? And are you sure that your wireless card isn't accidentally disabled under the device menu? I'll try and help as much as possible.

 

I press the button and it keeps working all the time. It looks that the function of the button doesn't work.

 

I have a 5040. The button works on mine. If I press it, it will say Enable or Disable Wireless in big white letters at the bottom of the screen.

 

By "not working" do you mean that the button keeps flashing? If so, mine does that sometimes when it can't connect properly to the wireless signal (which is a problem with the router and not the lappy). If there is no light flashing (or text coming up on the screen saying "enable" or "diable" ... like starling says above) then there is a problem with the wireless card. Try conecting to someone else's signal ... like a friend, or school/work, etc.

 

By not working I say that the wireless is always on and the button light too.
Maybe I need to install an Acer program that I don't have? I have none of the Acer applications. The machine is pretty fast like this.

 

Hmmm, so your "problem" isn't that your wireless doesn't work ... it's that it doesn't stop working? i.e., you can't use the button to turn it off? If this is the case I have read threads that discuss this problem on other machines as well (they had to use their pc's software in order to activate/deactivate their wireless ... and it did have something to do with them not having every Acer program installed; at least that's what I remember anyway). I'll try and find it for you, but be on the lookout yourself. I believe it had something to do with eFramework and Launch Manager, but don't take my word for it ... I don't really remember.

It wouldn't hurt to try, as you can always uninstall it later!

Yes. Why don't you have it on your computer? It doesn't harm anything, and it does make those quick access keys work too.

 

There are two buttons on the front left of your computer; the right hand button is the one to disable/enable your Wireless LAN.
Just hold the button in for a second or two. A message will show up on your computer that it is disabled and the light will go out.
Perhaps you have to be connected to a wireless network in the first place to have the light on and be able to activate or deactivate it; I suspect that this is the problem.

The light on the front left side of your computer is also the button you push to enable or disable your wireless connection.

 

My acer 5040 will not turn on the wireless and the buttons do not work. I have updated to vista... any ideas

 

Hi. I know this is a really old thread, but if your setting up a Aspire 5040 for Windows 7 you may need this info. This thread put me on to the solution. It's the Launch Manager.

I upgraded my Mom's 5040 partially to solve a problem with a corrupted XP Home setup and equal parts out of curiosity to see how the laptop would handle a Win 7 installation. It went surprisingly well except for one thing. The wireless Atheros AR5BMB5 card would not work. After much googling and bleary eyed reading late at night, this is what worked for me.

If you don't have a driver go to this web site and download this file http://rapidshare.com/files/258984032/XP_7.6.1.160_Vista_7.6.1.122.zip There are a lot of drivers out there in various version,this one worked for me.

If no longer on the Rapidshare site just do a search of the "XP_7.6.1.160_Vista_7.6.1.122.zip" portion of the file. it should be easy enough to find. Unzip the file, run the executable. It will auto detect your Win7 OS and load the Vista driver for the wireless card.

Next go to Acer support site here http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_5040.html Find Launch Manager 1.1.1.5.1 in the drop down menu under MS Windows Vista. Download zip, run executable, and reboot. Once you log back into Windows, it will take a minute or two and the front panel wireless switch will blink a few times then it will continuously stay lighted. Open network connections. Configure for your router settings, and you should be good to go.

Additonal info: Windows Update installed the latest driver for the Atheros wireless adapter. Version 8.0.0.171 dated 07/08/09. Works fine.

 

thanks to all, my wireles button works now. never ever delete this forum cause it can help a lot of people out there. but still i have a problem about the bluetooth button, can anyone help me, it doesnt work either. Well, thanks again!

 

For all of those that cannot keep their wireless button to stay on or enabled..i have a quick and temporary fix good if you dont have warranty or need it right now. Tape a disk shaped watch battery down on it. I know it sounds ghetto but it works well enough.

 

I just wanted to take my time to THANK each and everyone who posted to this issue. I have been an IT guy for 12 years, and I have formatted and redone ALOT of pc, laptops, ect....and if it would not have been for this thread, I dont knoe that I would have ever gotten this LT fixed for my customer....
