    Hello to all,

I'm on the market for a laptop and I love the specs of the 4820TG. However, I've read harsh reviews of its display (low contrast, blacks looking like grey, etc). This is a real issue as the main use of my laptop will be for photo editing and processing (when I'm traveling). If the contrast is way off, post processing is not going to look good once on a calibrated monitor.

Have you guys heard anything about this laptop in general and its screen in particular ?

    Thanks !

Acer IMO has at least average or above average screens (I believe Anandtech had favorable reviews of the 6920G at least). In general though, laptops have the crappiest of the crap for screens. For the most part, they're 6-bit TN panels and will never hold a candle to even a cheap desktop monitor. If you have the money and want a great screen, you'll either have to scale down to a 13" (AFFS+ in Lenovo X200 or MVA in Fujitsu) or up to a 17" laptop (IPS in HP Elitebook 8740w or 8-bit TN in Dell Precision M6500).

For your purposes the Acer display is likely to be crap.

Not very reassuring... Is the display on the 3820TG any better ?

I'm about to give up... The Envy 14 may have a good display but no one knows how good the battery will be, for instance. And I can't wait for ever to buy a laptop (absolute deadline is September when I'm leaving on a safari and I need the laptop way before to install the softwares, get used to the beast and dedect any major problem).

The Envy will be released on June 27th. For now, it is probably your best bet, given your needs. The 1600 x 900, 350 nit display looks great on paper.

The Acer display is really not as bad is its reviews. It can be brought up to its advertised specs by calibrating the monitor. But, for your purposes I would want a bigger and brighter display with better resolution. I would wait to see the Envy 14. If you are buying the Acer in the US, it won't be here till the end of the month anyway so you have time to make your decision. Another option would be the Sony Z. The Z12 will be available in a week or so.
