I'm sure this has been covered before but not finding it.

Vista went sideways on a friend's 8930G laptop. Vista Start-up Repair would run but didn't find anything. Tried sfc /scannow and a few other things but finally gave up. Fired up an Ubuntu LiveCD, saved whatever personal data I could find, then reinstalled Vista from the Alt+F10 option at bootup. The Alt+F10 option did not give the option of fixing Vista and leaving personal data alone. It was either clean install from recovery partition, or clean install from discs. The owner didn't think discs had ever been burned so I used the recovery partition.

Vista is working now, but there's no eRecovery icon when I start the Acer Empowering Technology utility. The .pdf Acer manual that's present in the default install says it should be there. I wanted to make recovery discs, hoping that next time we could repair Vista and leave personal data alone.

Does the 8930G simply not come with eRecovery from within Windows?

It's available for download from the Acer site - Download
Sorry, I couldn't find the direct link to it, just work your way through the choices and check under applications.
    Hope this helps

Wow, hey, thanks for the fast reply! So, it's not that something's broken, right? Acer just disabled the ability to burn your own recovery discs?

Things sure have gone downhill over the years. First, no genuine Windows disc, you gotta make your own. Now they've turned that feature off and you gotta pay again for the discs you didn't get in the first place?

Our Acer 5920 allowed me to make recovery discs. Not that I really care anymore, because it's running Linux now and will probably never see Vista again...

EDIT: Wait, wait, back up the truck. I misunderstood your message. You mean eRecovery can be downloaded, and it should then work?

ANOTHER EDIT: I'll be hornswoggled. It worked. I didn't dare go online with the Acer since it has no AV software. The owner is signed up with Comcast and will install the security suite provided by them. So I downloaded the Acer eRecovery d/l to a thumbdrive on our Linux PC and transferred it to the Acer. It extracted itself to the right folder, and eRecovery is now in the Empowering Technology toolbar. Burning the DVD's as I write this.

    Thanks for the help!
