I've just bought this laptop and for the most part I'm really happy with it, does everything it says on the tin and everything I want it to. Now the problem I have is that it comes with 4Gb of RAM, but Vista32, so it only sees 3070Mb of RAM. Is there a way around this? If the only way is to install x64 can I use the key for Vista on the bottom of the laptop, and will I have any driver issues?

Yes, you can install Vista x64 and there are no driver problems. Maybe you will have the fingerprint scanner mode switched, but that's it.

Sorry for being dim, but do you mean I can use the key that came with the 8920 for x64? - I have an OEM x64 disc but the key is already used on another machine. If i need to get another key for it to work I won't bother at the moment since it's only a minor inconvenience.

after you install SP1 for vista you will see 4GB of Ram at the system window.but not at the perfomance tab of Task Manager.this is because of the 32bit OS.

you can use the key on the bottom of the laptop from my understanding...
but that is not the key that is actually currently in your PC

check in the WINDOWS FORUM they can point you to a program that will reveal the KEY that VISTA was installed with....

99% of the time the COA key is not the KEY that was used to install VISTA, so by extracting the current key from the system then using that one when installing VISTA64 you shouldn't have to call microsoft to reauthorize the new install.... but if you use the KEY on the COA sticker on the bottom of your PC you will have to call MS to get it authorized....

BTW the COA key is what determins which version of VISTA is installed. (home, basic, ultimate, ect) but from everything i've read the keys work with either 32 or 64 bit versions...

Righty, since I have the x64 OEM media I'll give this a go, I assume I can just factory restore from the media I made at the start should thins go wrong.

I'm more cautious with this notebook than desktops - I'd have reformatted 6 times already just playing to find out :D - I suppose the big question is are these machines really that different from desktops and should I be that worried if I can default the lot if things go wrong?

Use ABR to back-up your licence and restore it after you install x64.

Well, all done. And guess what, the only thing that seems to be affected is the fingerprint reader. Before I set it up and it only took 3 tries to sort each finger. Now it takes 10+ and takes a good few tries to log in. Can I fix this?

first of all congrats on getting the vista 64 bit working!!!!

i too have much more desktop experience than i do laptop experience....
the way i see it is that laptops are PCs,,just made in smaller packages and fewer options for certain features like graphics, and costs are higher!!!

as long as you are capable of reinstalling the OS from a source CD then you have things pretty well under control. as long as you don't do PHYSICAL DAMAGE,, then you are capible of reloading the OS onto the HDD. that usually solves most issues unless there is bad hardware involved...

just treat the laptop with a bit of respect and you should be fine
and most importantly, have fun!!! :)

Well, I know what the problem is, but I have no idea how to rectify it. Basically, the fingerprint scanner is working backwards. If you scan your finger down as per the tutorial, it takes 10-15 swipes, if it works at all. If you push your finger towards the screen and get a smooth swipe every time, back to the 3 swipes we had before, and it logs in first time every time (my backwards swiping ability not withstanding). So, any ideas how to adjust the settings of the reader itself?

Did anyone try installing any drivers from 8930G onto 8920G? I am asking, because drivers for same hardware are newer, eg:
    1) WebCam Utility_Suyin_0.3M DV_v2.0.4_Vistax32x64_XPx32x64.zip
    vs
    Camera_Utility_Suyin_0.3M DV_v2.0.8.3.zip

    2)FingerPrint Utility_ABIG Validity_v6.0.00.08_Vistax32x64_XPx32x64.zip
    vs
    FingerPrint Utility_ABIG_v6.0.00.15.zip

I know ther rule of 'don't fix it, if it ain't broken' but..., well..., maybe there is something at least improved? ;)
I will try the webcam update, I think.

    Rgds,
    P.

    Try this registry setting
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Validity\vfs101]
    "swipeDirection"=dword:00000001

That works for me on my 8920G
