I was looking around the forums and saw that there was a new driver or something for the ATI X1600. I went to ati.com and downloaded the right driver and program, and followed the intructions there for the uninstall of the old ATI program and the installation of the new one.

The program (ATI Catalyst) installed fine. The driver .exe, however, said it couldn't find the driver (???) and told me to load a standard VGA driver. So I went to Acer.com and now I am downloading the .zip file which contains the standard drivers.

    What is up with this?

The error says like "INF Error: Video driver not found". This happens right after I hit accept on the installation.

Sounds to me like it's a windows thing. We get convinced that if we update a driver we are going to get better performance. This is not always true. Sometimes the opposite result is achieved and we get new problems. Other times it is just better to live with what works. Possibly your version of Windows did not recognize the new driver or the un-install was not complete. Either of these two things are most likely no fault of yours. If you are determined to update the driver on your Acer 8200, you may want to try not following the Acer instructions and doing a windows driver update from device manager. You can also point to the new driver on your hard drive and see how determined windows is. I hope this helps. Hang in there. Keep it simple and good luck.

I think what you tried to install is Dekstop version off Catalyst 6.9. It doesnt compatible with 8200, and require some tweak. You can download mobility version of it. It will work. Dont forget to remove your previous driver.

I suggest you to use Catalyst 6.8 instead, ATI POWERPLAY seems doesnt work with my laptop and catalyst 6.9

BTW where did you get your 8200, 100 giga HDD is asian model I guess

I agree with samuderaindia, stay away from the Ati mobility 6.9 drivers. If you planning on playing Company of Heroes. It will mot work. Although I tryed it on the Acer 5672 X1600. Good luck :)

I'm currently using the Omega Drivers version of ATI Driver 6.7 and it's working fine. I'm playing FEAR on it (just gently trying the demo since I can't actually afford to buy anything right now). EQ2 worked fine, and Oblivion worked (couldn't stand the game, but it did run).

I have the Acer 8200 and I suggest you simply install the drivers from the Acer website. I have the version 8.231 and they work really well, no problems and I scored 4514 on 3Dmark05.

With the original drivers I barely broke 2000, so yea try the ones from Acer.
