Ive taken the back cover off my 5920 many times and really never took a look at it until now. What i noticed is that the vents for the ram are covered by a glossy black see through tape rather than mesh, which covers all the other vents.

Ive linked a picture below: add http into brackets
    ( )://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h60/PsychoNutype/05-12-08_1715.jpg

Has anyone else noticed that in their laptop? or is mine the only one where they ran out of mesh and decided tape was just as good. I wanna just rip it off.

Another thing, has anyone been able to overclock their 5920?(mines got a T8100) ive been searching for days and cant find anyone who has. I always have my backcover off and have my laptop resting on a custom dual 120mm fan notebook cooler. My idle temps are from 37-42, load is just over 60. I wanna push this thing just a bit more.

Hmmm wonder if i should just take off the tape...it should be fine, but why would they cover them in the first place.

Yeah ive tried pretty many oc programs too and they wont work

Im using desktop drivers from laptopvideo2go i think version 178.13, and they wont let me overclock my gpu. Apparently it gets good fps with stock speeds compared to other though. What drivers are you using?

Overclocking the 5920G is not possible for now.. And memory modules don't need an open vent, etc. They don't even need any sort of passive cooling. They barely go over 30-35*C. :p

you oc the gpu only not the cpu use riva tuner my setting were
600/1250/500 but went down cuz it overheated to 95c and it
underclocked(maybe thats why its fried now??)so then i used
    575/1200/500 worked perfect.

no i know the difference between cpu and gpu
ive tried rivatuner , atitool, and some other programs, they dont work because my driver apparently doesnt allow you to overclock
what driver version are you using?

i dont remember excactly since my card fried and cant use my acer i think it was 176.xx or 177.xx if i remember correct the 176.xx were faster for me and stayed with those.I think only rivatuner and ntune will work with nvidias, atitool probably for ati.

Acer is retarded why block vents? I rip that off and one vent was totally cover with black film. My laptop seems to run much cooler now.

I will still have to test the machine more but, it looks like taking the film off helped.

Keep the stuff away from the vents. The stuff serves zero purpose.

Vents are there to cool or what

And they canno't do their job with plastic or "stuff" blocking them.

Maybe another Acer "assemby fault"

    Cheers,
    Theo

What about the rest of the MB that relies on some sort of air circulation from the "taped" holes.

    Doesn't make sense

I dunno, you could remove it, considering that it might make you feel better.

Notebooks are neither built nor assembled by Acer. Acer follows a make to stock approach, unlike other companies such as HP, Dell, etc who actually offer CTOs/BTOs.

The 5920 is manufactured by Quanta, and considering that its the no. 1 ODM out there in the market, I wouldn't consider the tape to be a fault. Even my 3680 has the tape in a similar position right above the memory modules.

And there seem to be vents for proper circulation of air....

Maybe they the blocked vents create some sort of vacuum inside to get better cooling but idk. I think if you had a laptop cooler and took those off it could improve cooling imo.

I removed the tape from my 5920G, feels good man. As referenced earlier on this thread, is there a consensus as to the best driver for the 8600GT? I am running old school 169.09....

I see your point but it is keeping hot air in also so unless a Acer rep is reading this and post we will never know why they do it.

tried 176.92 from acer and its working great. Benched it using Counterstrike source, and i got a 10fps increase using these non optimized drivers?(dont know why) Plus it lets me overclock, and wakes from sleep mode.
