The display on my Acer 5920G (with the possibly faulty 8600M GT Nvidia card) has been flickering intermittently over the last year or so. I've updated it to the most recent 2010 NVidia drivers (just now) hoping it will eliminate the flicker. Essentially the screen flickers every 30 seconds to a minute or so, regardless of resolution.
Could this be the driver slowly going on me? It hasn't gotten any worse over the last year, i.e., has remained about the same in terms of intervals and flicker.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

I had that issue on my 9650m gt... On the old 8600m GS I didnt have any flickering...
As I could find the flickering was caused by Powermizer and changing GPU core speed bug, but with latest drivers v257.21 and that flickering is gone...
You could try this... Start GPU-Z and monito GPU core speed and check will appear together with lower clock speed of your GPU...
Or just use guide how to disable powermizer and check if it will help...
EDIT:
I forgot to mention, you can check what I wrote above if flickering persists when GPU idle...
But if it is happening under load, I dont have any clue... -
What is "GPU-Z" or "Powermizer"? Don't think I use either of those, unless they come preinstalled or with the ATI drivers?
Thanks! -
Powermizer is used by nvidia for automatic lowering GPU core speed /frequency to save power and reduce heat... It is built in drivers files and installed to Windows registry to control GPU (graphic processing unit) core speed...
GPU-Z is a program similiar to CPU-Z and it is used to get information about a graphics card such as core speed, memory amount, type and speed etc... It also can monitor GPU core speed and temperature, is it under load or idle... That is in short... You can download it from here:
Download GPU-Z 0.4.3 Free - A lightweight utility designed to display all the information about your video card and GPU. - Softpedia
Run it and under "Sensors" tab monitor GPU core speed and check when will flickering apear...
Hope this will help... -
Hi, it also could be the LCD ribbon cable needing re-seating, a known issue, does it also flicker when you move the screen?
Chris -
No, I don't believe it flickers when I move the screen (don't recall that). Will try the GPU-Z thing mentioned above, and if that fails maybe a clean install of Windows and drivers.
-
Well, just did a clean install of Win7 on the laptop, appears to have eliminated the flicker. Going to install the latest NVidia driver for the 8600M GT and see if it does anything (as I'm on the stock Win 7 driver).
-
Hmm ... still flickers, though not as badly as before. Will try that GPU program ...
-
The older drivers like the 185.2x sorted the flickering issues I had when I had the 8600m gt. Try it if you really can't stand the flicker
-
Hmmm ... will see if I can find that driver.

Searching google, but can't find old NVidia drivers (even on the Nvidia site for that matter oddly enough). Do you know where these can be found?

Hey Guys.
Registered just for this thread.
I think I figured out what causes this flickering. I had the same problem for weeks where the screen would flicker like crazy for no obvious reason. I even pulled open a few plastic panels because I suspected the screen cable.
The problem is actually overheating
I was already aware of the overheating problem because during the last year (about the same time the flickering started but I didnt realise the connection) my laptop would abruptly switch off 10 mins into running any game, even some full screen browser games.
I solved the problem by buying a miracle laptop cooler. The flickering has completely stopped and I can play any game for as long as I want.
So the problem lies with the laptops own cooling system which sucks and wears out quickly and the heat then builds and interferes with the screen. The laptop cooler I got works flawlessly but can be a pain to carry around.
Any ideas on how to fix the original fan are most welcome.
Let me know if it worked for you.

Did you clean out the fans and cooling fins on the cooling system heatsink?

chrisscatt might be right. It is a known fult of the 5920. I saw a vid on youtube, of how to put it right. It's just remove the power board cover strip and press the LCD cable into the socket firmer.
