I got a panic call from a friend whose nearly new Turion based HP Pavilion wouldn't boot into Vista, 'losing' an important document with a deadline looming.

The Pavilion only offered reset back to day zero recovery options and no HP recovery discs had been made. I didn't want to risk zapping everything and losing the important file.

Not a major problem I hear you say, boot your trusty data recovery software (in my case Lsoft Active at Boot V3.0.9) from USB and copy the important file to another machine via the stick.

Except the Pavilion wouldn't let me copy the file, although I could see it in the directory.

Luckily my 5315 was to hand and when I popped the Pavilion's HD into the Acer and booted from the USB stick, the file transfer was a breeze.

    Acer's open architecture strikes again :D !
