My friend recently installed the CA Internet Security Suite in her Acer 5102 laptop, and thats when her wireless trouble started. It caused her laptop to restart itself evry 2 minutes, so later on she uninstall the progam, and her laptop stop restarting.
-However now she cant connect wirelessly. She can connect to internet thru cable. She have her friend check out her laptop, and he says that her router in the laptop burned out. So i just want to help her get second opinions.
-So is it possible that the router in her laptp burned out causing her to unable to connect wirelessly? I didnt know that a laptop itself contains a router???
-Any suggestions on why she cant connect wirelessly?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

There is no router build in the 5102. There is a mini PCI or mini PCI-E card in there in the bottom - the large bottom peace you can get off by unscrewing 4 screws. I never heard that a wireless card burned out. I would suggest uninstall driver reinstall driver. You can buy an other wireless card - if nothing works! But do not buy a intel card - it would only work with a centrino notebook. But i do not think it is the wireless card. I think it is a software problem - so try reinstall the driver - if it do not work go back to a working point in XP Management. If that not work - recover the notebook with the recovery disk - be sure you backuped everything you have to! If that not work - i think then it is the time to buy a new wireless card! Oh i suppose the wireless card is switched on?

Yeah, thats why i thought it was strange her friend said something wrong with the router, i was like, do he really know something about computer, it dont sound right. Anyway i did tried to uninstall and reinstalling, but it still doesnt work. I know we can try reformating, but she didnt want to do all the backup for her data and stuff.

Hmmm...about the wireless switched on, i should think so, but when i look at her laptop last time i didnt check that part.

You dont think its the wireless card's prob? Strange thing is befor this problem, she had problem connecting to her cousin's westell router, but was able to connect to her own netgear router. So i am really puzzle about whats wrong.

If you can see any wireless network - the card is ok. Most times it is a problme with the encryption - WPA pre shared key, WEP 64/128 ... . The other times it is an incompatibility with the wireless router... . If you cannot see any wireless network it could be the wifi card. If you have also a notebook - you could take your card - but be sure - take of AC power, take out the battery do some antistatic work on the notebook and yourself - then change the cards. The antenna plugs are a little small - be careful :). Otherwise a mini pci wireless card is not so expensive an ebay. If you hesitate to do this - call Acer!
