    Hi,

A (to me) very weird problem with my Acer 5100 laptop. Windows froze after a usb unplug of a head phone. Rebooting without any peripherals did not work. Any safe mode freezes up also. Loading stops when the Windows XP progress bar is showing or when the .sys files are loading in safe mode. At some attempts it reached the checkdisk page but then it freezes up just before starting the disk check.
Did so far: alt f10 recovery partition: windows also freezes up during loading. Windows XP setup cd (working on other computers): also crashes during loading. In fact now I think all bootable Windows cds will crash during loading. Then I used livecd linux (Knoppix) and that loads without problem! Very weird. then I did diagnostics. Harddrive is ok, memory is ok, cpu is working. Am suspecting that usb bus or ports are fried but dont know how to find out
Any ideas what to do next? Can a usb problem prevent all Windows cd's from booting?

    Thanks,
    Gert

Does it give a BSOD..?? Any error message..??
Sounds more like a registry problem..!!

You tried Safe Mode? If Windows starts in Safe Mode it's most likely a driver problem.
You have any usb devices attached? Any new hardware installed?

No BSOD, no error messages. It will not boot into Windows anymore. I tried safe mode. Safe mode does not work either, just freezes after the safe mode begins booting. So now I cannot look into any error messages. However I can bootup into linux and export all the XP harddrive partitions over the network. Can I repair Windows remotely from another computer maybe, just by writing/deleting files?

Additional remark: no hardware recently installed, no usb devices attached
