I am having a keyboard problem on my Acer 5100 laptop running Vista Ultimate. When I hit keys other characters appear, for example, "o" shows "6". I first noticed this when the screen timed out and prompted for a login and my password did not work until I hit "New User". When I restart Vista entering the pasword is no problem.

Two things happened prior to this happening, Microsoft updates were installed and I installed a program that I downloaded. I removed those updates and uninstalled the program and this did not help. I also checked that the Language setting were English (US). I also ran Registry Mechanic and Windows Defender to try to correct the problem.

What steps can I take to get this fixed? Is this a known hardware problem?

This is pretty easy to fix. You have numlock turned on and the aspire 5100 has a full keyboard which means that the numpad is embedded in the keyboard itself. If you notice letters U, I, O etc have small numbers in the upper right hand corners. When numlock is enabled those letter keys will show the corresponding number when pressed.

Anyway to turn off numlock just press fn+f11 and that will fix your problem :)

Your a lifesaver! I have never intentionaly used Num Locks before. As I recall the program I installed was an Access Database and Alt F11 is used to enter a certain part of the program. I guess I hit FN instead.

    Thanks.
