    Hi
I have always used Acer and have been a happy customer.FOr the last two years I have been using the IBM T40 and have been an unhappy one!

1)Can anyone tell me the differences between the 3200 series and 4000 series? I notice that 4000 has 40GB HDD and wide screen option.

2)If I want to purchase a fully-loaded 4000 how does one do it.I checked CDW,PCNation etc.No one has anything other than the base model.

    Thanks in advance

    1. The difference between a 3200 & 4000, is that the 4000 has shared video memory, not dedicated. They provide a lot less graphics power for 3D rendering & gaming. It's mainly for business apps, internet surfing & older games. The 3200 has the new ATI 9700 GPU with 64MB of dedicated video memory. This will provide a LOT more graphics power to 3D rendering and newer games. Also, the HDD is larger in the 3200 and the CPU is faster (faster Dothan vs older Banias)

    2. I'm assuming the top model you're refering to is the 4001WLCi-XP Pro. You can get this unit at Newegg.com from the link below.

But, if you're going to go with the 4001WLCi, why not take a look at the 4501WLMi? This unit is spec'd the same as the 4001WLCi, but has an ATI 9700 video card w/64MB (same as the 3200) & the faster Dothan based CPU. Plus, it only costs an extra $150. I think getting a WAY better video card & faster CPU is worth $150.

    Hey Venombite
how do you figure out the processor names on these? What does the 3201 carry? And are they all made of mag alloy?

    Athreya,

    1. The 4501 doesn't indicate that it utilizes the new Folio Design (not really sure what the difference is). Is it just a better looking design? If that's the case, the 4501 uses the exact same case design as the 4001, so even though it doesn't say it on their site, it should be since it's the same unit as the 4001.

    2. I'm sure it's a type-o that these other dealers have made. I mainly base my specs from the manufacturer, if they made the mistake, you can try arguing with them to actually get the specs they advertised.

    3. Any processor with a numeric model # after Pentium M, is one of the newer CPU's (eg. Pentium M 1.5 = older Banias w/1MB L2 cache, Pentium M 715 [or higher] 1.5 = newer Dothan w/2MB L2 cache). Actually, this is not always true, apparently, Intel decided to rename the 1.5Ghz Banias to the 705. I think they did this to confuse people more.

Here's a link to the intel site that lists all their CPU's they provide. If you go to the middle of the page, it'll have all the Pentium M models. Generally, all the models with 2MB of L2 cache & 90nm architecture is based on the new Dothan technology.

    http://www.intel.com/products/processor_number/info.htm

    The 3201 has the new Pentium M 715 1.5Ghz Dothan CPU w/2MB L2 Cache.

    4. I don't think any of their units or made of mag alloy, I think the only one is the Aspire 2020 series. But those are much more than the 3201 & 4501 series.
