I am trying to fix a friends acer 3680 laptop. The screen is very faint on boot up and then black. I've hooked up an external monitor and everything works fine. I thought it was the inverter so I installed another one, same issue. I've tried fn bright, fn switch output screens, nada. Any other ideas?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Sounds like the backlight, which is replaceable, but it's a pain the rear job. You're probably better off just replacing the screen.

    Acer model Laptop Screens

And I am not making a joke here.Since it wasn't the inverter at fault I think you need a new screen.

    Aspire 3680 takes 14.1" WXGA CCFL-Backlit Screens.

You are describing a backlight failure.

    You can use..

    AU Optronics: B141EW01 - B141EW05
    LG Phillips: LP141WX1 - LP141WX5
    Samsung: LTN141AT01 - LTN141AT15 and higher.
    Chi Mei Optoelectronics: N141L1 - N141L3

There's a couple other models, but those are most common. You can get a good quantity of those screens for the $50 range, each.
