I realize this is an Acer forum but there's a lot more eyeballs on this forum than there are on the Gateway forum so i'll ask my question here as well (i believe Acer bought out Gateway a few years back) anyway my question is posed here if you wouldn't mind taking a look... http://forum.notebookreview.com/gateway-emachines/527676-gateway-id79c-second-hdd-bay-useless.html

Another poster to the forum had the exect same issue/question about a month ago but got no response... http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/515980-acer-as7745g-secondary-hdd-issue.html

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this for me, thanks.

No one else here has come across this problem??? maybe you don't have an answer per se but it's hard to believe no one else has encountered this situation being it's an Acer/Gateway dilemma....

I believe there is a 2nd hard drive adapter that is necessary to properly orient the SATA connector, but I wouldn't know what part number it would be or anything.

Have you called Acer/Gateway and asked them?

I have!!! Gateway doesn't offer the connector and advised i try a third party vendor....no dice......in a fit of frustration i contacted Acer as well (Gateways parent company) and received the very same BS response......i should of bought a HP or Dell though i suspect customer support is lacking there as well.

Try these guys; I stumbled upon them earlier today for an unrelated issue, and since they're Acer-certified, they should have the part you're looking for.

My 5935g has the same design I think so the spare part from it:

    20.PBJ02.002

    The description lists it as:

    HDD CONNECTOR

That's the same type of connector i've seen online in my previous searches, it's the same and/or similar one used in HP's, Dells, Acers, etc. it allows the hdd to interface with the different type connector on the MB, in my situation i don't need to interface between two different style connectors, the connector on my MB is the same type of connector as my hdd is, the problem is it's mounted at a 90 degree angle to the MB (vertically) making installation of the hdd literally impossible.

In theory yes but it would require the hdd hang outside the laptop (it's a very tight fit in the 2nd hdd bay) so in all practical purposes no that wouldn't work, i just don't understand Gateways logic behind this design, perhaps it's a proprietary design on Gateways part and they'll make the proper connecter available at a later date??? i have no idea.

Would it work if you used a 1.8" HDD and a 2.5" to 1.8" converter cable?

There's literally no room available between the connecter and the hhd cover, they butt up against one another when the hdd cover is on, it's really a ridiculous setup and i wish i knew Gateways/Acers logic behind it, i can get by with the 500GB in my primary drive but i would of liked to have had 1TB in a Raid 0 configuration, i guess i'll just hold out for SSD's to drop below the $1.00/GB price point.
