Hi.Would be great if anyone could help.
I have an Aspire5051ANWXMi - that I use mainly for Video and Photo Editing. Since I bought in Thailand and am now in Japan- im finding it hard to get it checked.

Basically it seemed all of a sudden about a week ago- my laptop started to become incredibly slow, it takes about half an hour for start up and XP to launch. I freed up disk space and any unneeded files- currently have 7gb free.

I downloaded spybot search and destroy, registry booster etc and no viruses are found. It speed up slighlty since then, but still takes a long time, and when I play back any media or when any sound is made-it is incredibly jerky and slow. For example when Xp starts I can hear the start up sound about 20times ringing in quick succession with horrible static noise in the background- this applies to everything which makes editing impossible. Video playback is also incredibly slow when playing I may only see one image every 30 seconds.

I remember the day it started, I left it on for a while - forgetting to turn it off for over 2 days- maybe something overheated??

When I check the processes upon start up- with nothing running it has 55 processes- some I recognise, some I dont like TeaTimer.exe and svchost.exe.
When nothing is running CPU usage jumps around from almost nothing to 100%. Commit Charge is around 646m/1053m.

Would anyone know what the problem is or how to get it fixed? Any help would be great. Thanks

P.s to any on the go editors - dont get an Aspire5051- its been terrible

Spybot is not a virus guard download Kaspersky trial copy & run it.

    or

Try to restore your laptop before say something like
"to any on the go editors - dont get an Aspire5051- its been terrible"

I agree, Aspires are terrible.... Half the laptops with problems seem to be some type of Acer Aspire. You could do a mem check because that seems the first thing to break down in Aspires and it can cause a number of different complains.

Overheating the machine shouldn't be possible because all modern laptops turn themself off when they get above a preset temperature. Of course this safety can fail but it seldom seem to do so.
Still, it's a bit funny that the cpu goes to full throttle without a reason. You should be able to see what it's doing through source control, you can access that through the task control menu under preferences.

Cleaning up your registry every now and then would be a good idea to keep a computer speedy, and defraging your hdd on a regular bases is also a good idea.

A good and free anti-virus program is AVG, just Google it if you want to try it out.

Computers rarely start doing weird things without some form of user abuse/unintelligent use. My suggestions as follows:

    1. As Bigspin says, download Kaspersky trial and run it
    2. If all shows clear than make backups of all your important files and reinstall XP.

Don't down a product until you are sure it is a product failure and not something you might have done as a user. Gather all your facts and then judge.

Sorry, but that is just the impression i get reading the forums. I've read so many complains about Acer Aspire machines, especially with the build quality, they just seem to break down a lot more then any other notebook or notebook brand. With all those reports i just can't recommend it to anyone and i sure wouldn't buy one myself. They use good components and often a good base barebook , but the inside components just don't seem to be put together properly most of the time. It would also be a very good explanation why they are priced so low.

Acer sells stacks of laptops. As with anything, you mostly hear from people that have had problems and rarely from those that are extremely happy with their purchase/purchases. Sure, Acer have had issues with certain of their models. As many other lappie manufacturers have had.

It is no reason however to simply condemn Acer without actually owning one, using it and then judging. Believe me, there are many many more happy Acer users out there there than the handfull of kids/people etc. that take pleasure in bashing a great product.

Buy one, use it for professional purposes and then judge. Don't believe all the negative Acer crap you read on forums.

Ok thanks guys for trying to help. Already purchased all the virus guards etc- but what I was told was the main problem is that the windows Xp is fake. Even though I bought from a legitimate store in Thailand. Im hoping this is the problem, as I havent used the laptop in a careless way, but i have had a lot of trouble with it

U might want try the following :

remove the battery , then boot the laptop without the battery...
im sure ull see the difference ..

alot of acer's older notebooks have serious battery issues and mine is having the same problem ( reinstalled xp )
