    Hi,
I'm looking for a notebook for a 2nd backup one. I've come across tons of Acer's but I don't know enough about them to know which one to buy. There are some really good reviews and I've found many $800-$1000. That's my budget. I do prefer a PM and it has to have a built in wireless card.

Any suggestions with details, links would be deeply apreciated. Right this second I've narrowed it down to Acer but I don't know anything. I guess for the price HP is another option but I'd like to get some info/suggestions on Acer including Warranty issues. For my price I'm narrowed down alot. Averatec is not an option and if someone could compare the 2, please tell me Acer is much better.

    Thanks in advance,
    Heart [ :)][ :)][ :)]

Supposedly there is an Acer 3002 LCI with a Sempron 3000 and 8x DVD DL burner for $499 after rebate. There is a list of stores that have the 3000 with the burner, if there is one near you.

Personally, I do not think the Semprons or Celerons are all that bad. You must keep in mind that the battery life on those will not be as good as a Pentium M, but if you are not moving much it won't matter. If you like the glossy screens, I would look at the 1681:

The 4502 is a good basic machine with a DVD burner and XP Pro:

I haven't personally seen the 1681, but the 4502 seemed pretty decent. I would rate Acer as a good value brand, but not as sturdy as IBM or Fujitsu. Good Luck.

Yeah that is the rub about buying on the internet, you'll get a better price but returns can be problematic or non-existant. As I stated earlier, I think Acer offers a good quality/price ratio. If you want a better built notebook, you are probably going to have to spend more money. You could look on ebay for some ThinkPads, but you are going to have the returns issue there as well, but a ThinkPad will be better built.

If you are concerned about returns, I believe HPShopping.com offers 30 day return policy. You could get a Compaq r4000 with Athlon64 CPU for around $1000. Drop the memory to 256MB, the hard drive to 60GB 5400RPM and get 12 cell battery for about 3.5 hours of time. It will be a little heavy, but I would put HP in the same league as Acer. Good Luck.

Hey, here's one with really great specs for $999 at CompUSA.

In fact it almost sounds too good to be true.
