Not sure if it's a fault but my new 3810T sometimes won't charge unless it's switched on.

I ran it right down a few days ago and plugged it in to recharge overnight but in the morning nothing had happened (I don't think the amber charging light came on). However when I turned it on and plugged in it worked and charged fine.

In the evening I had about 20% left but this time I switched off by just shutting the lid. I plugged it in again but again the amber light didn't come on and it didn't charge. Just to confuse matters, when I then turned the machine off in Windows and plugged it in, the amber light came on!?

Is this a known issue or am I doing something wrong? I've tried it in different sockets (obviously) and made sure the connection is secure. It's annoying me because I expect the machine to charge up when I plug it in whenever. I've never come across this behaviour before.

Had this problem with my Thinkpad, tech support concluded it was a motherboard issue.

Just an update: have been through Call Centre Hell (at 0870 rates) to book my laptop in for repair.
    [rant]
It took 25 minutes waiting then trying to explain the problem to a pleasant Indian man whose command of the English language was less than perfect.

Eventually he said it was a known problem and booked me into the 'automated returns process' which involved listening to details of how to prepare the parcel, address the box and arrange collection spoken in a strong Indian accent at breakneck speed.

That done I then had to contact the carrier DHL myself (also on an 0870 number - which turned out to have been changed) going through the process the callcentre had just described.

What a totally useless bit of non-customer-friendly cr*p!? :-( There's got to be a better way of doing things than that - that's about 40 minutes of my life I won't get back and on top of that I won't get my machine back for "five working days after we receive it". All with no compensation for something which isn't my fault.

I actually asked if they might as well do the product-recall microphone cable fix while they were at it to save me the bother later on but the guy didn't undersatnd what I was on about so I gave up (or I might still be on the phone...). I'll put a note in with the machine but without much hope of success.
    [/rant]

Anyway I did find out that it was a known fault so hopefully something will be done....

Has anyone else had this experience?
