I am setting up an ACER 4674. It "seems" to be quite hot especially to the left side of and right on top of the Synaptics TouchPad.

This makes it "uncomfortable" to use for an extended period of time. But of course ACER claims that since it is not crashing due to overheat issues the comfort level is a "subjective" issue.

AFAIK it is made by Quanta Computers for ACER, but I can't find any Quanta part or product info to cross reference to other manufacturers who may also be OEMing the product.

Observed CPU temp ranges from 50 Celsius at idle up to 73+C while working on a hot day.

Average "in use" CPU temperature (internet, Fifa 2006) is about 61 to 63C.

Hard drive temperature is about 43 in idle/normal use, but has gone on three occassions above 50C. Maximum observed was 55C.

Note that the maximums were on a very hot day where indoor temp was above 30C.

Note, however, that even today we had ONE instance where the hard drive temp went above 50C.

Have other people had any issues with the 4674?

i think the problem with acer notebooks is not that they actually are too hot internally, but that the material that they are made of conducts too much of the heat just like with macbooks. i look at your temps and they seem to be around average.

Most of the heat seems to be concentrated on the palm rest (right above the hard drive), a spot which traditionally isn't as hot on most notebooks.

Are hard drive temperatures of 50C+ really considered normal?

The "smart monitoring" progam is complaining about the drive temp, and I always thought that hard drive failures increase significantly when the temperature hits 50+

I have no idea what regular core duo temperatures are... so I will take your word that mine appear to be within parameters!

Are the 1.66GHz system users observing similar temperature profiles?

i have an acer travelmate 4062Lmi and I get harddrive temperatures of 39-42C and CPU temp of 55C (as measured by Mobile Meter).

i bought a laptop cooler but that does not make any difference. so when i get fed up of the heat from the touchpad i use my mouse.

it is a very annoying build issue.
