Okay, I can get Windows XP Pro pretty cheap. I want to start my laptop (TravelMate 8204) from an absolute clean slate. I made the backup cds from eRecovery already that contain some drivers (hopefully all of them) and the Acer software if I need it.

So, does this process sound right?

    1) Use some program to merge all 3 partitions (into one NTFS partition).

    2) Boot the new Windows XP CD

    3) Install it over the old copy on my new NTFS partition

    4) Enter the code that comes with the Windows XP box

    5) Install my drivers from my CD, etc.

I can regrister Windows with the number on the bottom of my Laptop, correct? Or do I have to call Microsoft and deal with them?

Don't use the drivers on the Acer backup. Some of them are quite old. Go to Acer's site to download the newest version.

First, check that your copy of windows is an OEM copy. (if not, then you might need to do a Setupp.ini modification to change your copy to accept OEM keys. (i'm fairly sure the code at the bottom of your lappy is a OEM key)

Then, why merge into ONE NTFS partition? (large partitions get fragged easily and take longer to defrag + you're putting data at risk) Personally I'd format into 2 partitions, one for Operating system + programs and one for data. If I have any problems I only need to reinstall OS + prog!

Btw, does anyone know how can I get hold of a copy of OEM windows? Cause Acer didn't supply one.... or do i need to do the setupp.ini thing...

i_baked_cookies, can you send me a copy of the backup cd's? I've got an 8204 but stupidly didn't make the backup discs before I wiped my lappy.

    Thanks
