Hi, Got a 8935g, q9000 1tb 4gb ddr3 and ati 4670 1gb and have a few questions that if any of you guys could help me with would be great.

I am very computer savy and have built my own systems and overclocked etc for many years but this is my first laptop so any thing you think I should know just tell me.

Here I go :) , Why in the hell does this laptop have 5gb (4gb system ram and 1gb on the gpu) and a 32bit OS? I am waiting on the windows 7 upgrade but that will also be 32bit, Can I download a copy of windows 7 home premium x64 and use my genuine key, And if I do this can I get all the apps and drivers I need for full functionality of the laptop?

Also, When I turned it on brand new it is using 43% system memory, How much crap is on this thing lol? Is the upgrade cd for windows 7 a full new install or does it just upgrade the os without formatting the drive? Will the drivers needed for the laptop be bundled in the upgrade cd?

Anyone overclocked the cpu or gpu in this lappy? Any info or tips?

Thanks for the time, Any help is appreciated.

Anyone? I am sure the memory questions would apply to any laptop. Thanks.

You answered yourself. Remove all the crap you don't need.

I think it will allow you a full installation as well as upgrading from Vista. I have the update CD, but haven't unpacked it. Seeing the package, it seems to contain only 1 DVD, so no drivers. Just download them before upgrading (or after, that's up to you).

What is really important is the key for Windows 7. That's what will make you a legitimate Windows 7 owner. You can download the media from thousands of sites in a blink.

Hi mate and welcome to the forum. That's a very nice laptop you have but as always Acer is installing so much crap in there to keep costs down. Acer is not the only one, Sony is doing it as well, HP, Packard Bell and other companies. But still you can uninstall all the things that you don't (like I did), and the laptop will fly. The Acer Empowering soft is the best target and then all the crap games and soft that are in there. Obviously, the more you uninstall the better. For instance, check how many processes are running by going Task manager and clicking show processes from all users. Then, you can stop all the processes that are loading in the startup by going Windows Start > in the search box write msconfig and press enter > a window will pop up, go startup tab and there, deselect the programs that you don't want to load in the start up, like messenger, adobe, office, Quick time, iTunes, Java, Windows ehome etc. I am using 38 processes right now and I have 30% memory. When I had Vista I was around 47 processes and 33-38% memory. The RAM-video memory configuration you have is very common not only in laptops but in desktops as well (or at least, it used to be). Nevertheless, it is better to have that kind of configuration because you can exploit better the dual channel speed with two identical RAM memory sticks. Yes, it would have been better if it had 64-bit but Acer has been very hesitant at that area. Now, regarding the installation of 64bit, I am not quite sure if you can do what you are saying and if it is legal to do. First of all the copy you are going to download, is it legal? If it is then you might be able to do it but I think that the windows key you have is for Windows 7 32bit upgrade for your laptop. I don't know if anyone else has done something similar but for that issue you can check the Windows 7 sub-sub-forum in the Windows OS sub-forum. If you managed to do so let us know and as far as concerns the 64bit drivers (they won't be in the DVD upgrade) you can find them in the Acer support page and by selecting your laptop and the OS you have. The upgrade I did, it wasn't a clean installation but a usual upgrade and you won't need anything else but the two DVDs. Everything were done smoothly and successfully.
I haven't seen anyone overclocking the quad core but I am pretty sure you can do it. You can search the threads if you like for that matter. You can do the same for the GPU. But first try to free the resources in your laptop and finish with the upgrade.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help, I read in another forum that a product key for windows works for the 32 or 64bit version that it is for, i.e my key for windows 7 home premium will work for the 32 and 64 bit versions but will obviously not work for windows 7 ultimate 32 or 64.

Hi, it isn't unusual for Acer to install only a 32bit OS, I'm not sure but I don't think the 32 bit key will work on a 64bit OS either. As to memory utilisation, 43% is fine, if windows wasn't using the memory than I'd be concerned. There is a common misconception that Microsoft Windows Vista is poor at memory management but superfetch itself can use up to 35%, Vista will allocate the memory to a program if it needs to anyway. This might help to explain things a bit more http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=2163

    Hi,

I have an Acer 8935G with Q9000 - it now has 8 GB DDR3 RAM (does take 8GB contrary to what Acer say). Ordered this from the US - £90.00.

Runs fantastically and with multiple IE pages and Outlook 2010 running, I am at 29% memory utilisation.

    Cheers,

    Rob.
