Anyone else solved this issue (I know others have had it).

My dear 8204 just started to die, thought it was my new hard drive (which I was peeved about) and then realized it's actually the fan that's dying.

I know you can get a new thermal unit (including fan) for about $80, and I know that there are good numbers of laptop coolers out there, does anyone have a POV on the best bet?

Buy the new thermal unit. I think you'll still have issues if you don't have a working thermal unit in there.

Yeah, a notebook cooler is great if everything else is working, but if your internal fans are going you are in for a world of hurts if you do not replace them.

Best advise is not to use the lappie without a working CPU cooling fan.

You are going to hurt something no matter how good the (alternative) cooler solution you use under the lappie is.....

My 8202 began to fail this week, massive CRC errors on the harddrive, overheats, bluescreens and random shutdowns.

Luckily norwegian law states that any electronic product (like a laptop, tv etc etc) should last atleast 5 year, and since my laptop hasn't; the store I purchased it from has three options:

    Refund, replace, repair.

The only likely outcome is a refund due to parts being scarce at best.

Be nice if the US had laws like that, this is the third laptop I've had that hasn't lasted more than 3 years...

Bleh... it's working right now (and the Fan is going okay) but guess I start thinking about a new Laptop.
