    Hi,

Wondered if the collective minds here might be able to suggest if this upgrade is a good idea?

I may have the opportunity to pick up a cheap X9100, far cheaper than I could get say a T9800 T9900, both of which would be preferable due to 35W.

Acers literature states CPU's up to C2D 6mb are supported, I saw over here http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=359165 that a user with an 8930g upgraded to an x9100.

Does anyone know if the laptop power supply etc would handle a 44W cpu, don't want to burn anything out?

Also heat may be a concern? The cooling system on this notebook appears more substantial than the average. Currently with my P9500 after 8 hours of stessing the max temperature is 63c, and thats on a fresh AS5 application without undervolting

I don't 'need' to upgrade to an X9100 but thought if it's cheap enough I might as well!

    Thanks in advance everyone :D

I'd definitely say go for it.

BUT you need to be careful. I would definitely undervolt the CPU. This would reduce your power consumption and heat generation. Ive undervolted my T5750 down to 1v from 1.5. It runs 10 degrees cooler and saves me battery too. It also doesn't hurt performance.

There are plenty of undervolting guides in this forum as well as on the net. Good luck.

Thanks classic77, think I will give it a go if I can get the cpu cheap enough

I checked the other users spec for his 8930g and it looks as if both the 6930g's and 8930g's use the same chipset and power brick

So managed to get the X9100 at a good price so should have it sometime next week, so will post back results.

Noticed there is a BIOS update available on the Acer US site for the 6930g, however this update is not available from the European site?

Anyone know why this might be? Is it just a case that they havn't updated the Euro site yet? Should I update to this BIOS?

The Acer Euro FTP seems to have been deprecated for the new global download site.

Thanks TehSuigi, will give the US site a go

Just an update- received the X9100, installed with no problems.

Pleasantly surprised that max temp on load after an hour is 71c, on fresh AS5 and without undervolting (yet), idle temps are the same as the 25w P9500 :)

Anyone know if it's possible to unlock the bios to overclock this? From searching through posts it appears unlikely but thought id ask just incase someone knew a way?

EDIT: the 71c temp was with the bottom cover removed (oops), temps with the cover on reached 78c under load

I have undervolted using cpugenie and now the max temp under load is 66c @ 1.075v so very happy with the results :)

I agree!! Thanks again for the suggestion

I was so impressed with cpugenie I actually paid for the software

Hey lucino, congrats for your new CPU :D Can you provide some temp comparison between your new CPU and the old one. I'm seriously considering X9000, though it's pretty rare over eBay :(

    Thanks triturbo :)
It came with a T5800 originally which I never really looked at the temps as I swapped it straight away for the P9500.

P9500 (no undervolting on fresh AS5)
    Idle 38c-43c
    Load 63c

    X9100 (undervolted on fresh AS5)
    Idle 43c-57c
    Load 66c

    Ambient room temp 18-20c

The idle temps of the X9100 are probably higher than normal as I just upgraded the GPU and it is idling between 50-57c raising the overall temperature inside.
I'm going to do the copper shim mod and possibly remove the metal fan vent grills to try and drop the temps.

I had noticed the X9000 seemed fairly scarce on ebay myself, but you never know when one may turn up , it was just luck I got my X9100 at a good price :D

Hey was just reading a previous post you made- did you know lucino was a car???!

Thank you for the information. I guess, I'll pass the X9000. I made quite a lot of improvements to cut down the temps, but it's summer, the temperatures are climbing like a sport quattro over Pikes Peaks, my 5920G's temps are not far behind, the cooling system still have quite a lot of resource, but just a little bit more and it'll go on the hot side. So I don't think that it would handle X9000 within acceptable temperature range, which means that it's no go for me.

I learn it from you. Everyday something new :p

    :) Pikes peak indeed :D

Just an update, did the copper shim on the gpu and although it's still the same temp around idle I think the cooling system is now working more efficiently.

CPU idle temps are now 43-49c, next job is I'll be modding the air intakes and removing the fan vent grill for the GPU to allow more airflow

triturbo- what would you think are acceptable idle temps?

When I did copper mod on mine, it cuts the temps quite noticeably, but I think that it could do it even better since the fan never kicks in the highest gear anymore :)

Well, for Acer they are a bit higher than the most of the other brands :D I think that 45ºC is OK.
