So the other day I was working on my laptop and I moved the laptop, which in turn shifted the power supply wire on my laptop and noticed that it went to battery. I looked at the PSU unit and realized that the light was not working.

After fiddling with the wire between the laptop and the unit, it went back on and everything was good. Until last night... I pushed my laptop back on my desk and again it went out. I fiddled around for an hour but to no avail.

I finally cracked open the case of the PSU unit and up close I heard a single beeping noise around 2Hz (2 times per second). Anyone know what the problem could be?? I've ordered a replacement but it won't be here until sometime next week and I have exams... :( Any advice is much appreciated!!

If fiddling with the wire between your laptop and PSU caused the green light on the PSU to light up it must have been a short circuit caused by the cable.

Usually when the cable goes you end up with no power to the laptop but green light on the PSU still on. In your case wires must have touched each other and sent the PSU to hell.

I've had a similar experience with the exact same type of PSU that you have- I'm guessing 90W 4.74A- the wires between the power plug that you put in the laptop and the power-surge protector that's an inch or two away became worn out from constant bending to the point that the insulation actually melted in that spot and the whole thing became useless.
Luckily it didn't hard the laptop.

So I guess that's something that may happen- that "bulge" is too close to the plug and being heavy it constantly bends the wire in the same place. It seems it takes few years until it goes so you should be fine for some time with a new one.

Sorry for not being any help whatsoever

Pretty much what I thought the problem was at exactly the same place. I guess I'm SOL until my new one comes in?

Added a pic of the dissembled PSU. What a goopy mess. Should have taken the pic from the other side since there is a bulge where the wire meets the thick plastic end.

How did you open the PSU (hopefully without causing too much damage)?
I have two PSU like this one- one is dead but cables are OK and the other one is OK but the cable is dead. I though I'd "combine" them.

I used the 'ol flat head screw driver and brute strength method lol. Place the head on the short side (where the connectors are) and twist to pry it open. Once the first flathead snaps a bit of the glue holding it together, there should be a bit of a separation between the top and bottom plastic plates, then take another flat head and pry along the long side to break the rest of it. Hope that was clear, else I'll try to explain it a bit more. Although I say break, if you do it carefully and systematically, you can still put the cover back on.

Thanks for the tip- I'll try to find both PSUs and get to work.

Post here or PM me if you want to get stuck or need anything. I'm performing surgery now w/ my x-acto knife on the rubber wire lol.
