I will be getting a new notebook in a month, and was wondering how this notebook fares as far as quality goes?

Do not need a new notebook, but if my grandmother wants to send me one from Europe, then fine.

This was the highest specification notebook to choose from, so I am going to ask for it.

It has the T7700 and the 8600GT 512MB and up to 1268 with Turbo memory, if that makes a difference. It will have Windows Vista Premium Installed, with just a 250GB Hard drive. No problem on the Hard drive, since I will have a 320GB USB drive. It will have a TV Tuner w/Remote, HDMI/HDCP and HD DVD drive.

The specs seem ok, just wondering will this notebook be reliable?

    Actually GF8600M GT can't utilize full 512MB RAM,but it's OK!

You can upgrade your CPU to Penryn later

HD-DVD is almost dead so assume it have a DVD R/RW

Build Quality is good & so far no problems for me

The 5920g has been more than reliable for me. I upgraded to 4gb ram and installed vista ultimate x64 and it is running like a champ (it was running fine with the default vista install as well by the way). my vista reliability index is at a 9.5 (out of 10). The reason for the loss of 0.5 was the crash of a beta application I was testing.

    Regards,
    M

    Thanks for the replies guys!

So the HD DVD means nothing? I thought that would at least mean it has a good display. The video RAM should mean something, like not having to use the notebook resources if not just to identify rather it will have DDR2 or 3? But if the CPU would need upgrading, then is this notebook even worth getting? I’m completely happy with what I have, and would hate to sell the new notebook on the grounds it was a gift. My mom got me a Toshiba with Duo Core 1.6 and an ATI XPRESS 200 video. She was sad to see I had traded it for a 160GB IPod. :) Should I just tell my grandmother to save her money? The USB drive would be nice to have, and would be happy just getting it, if the notebook is not worth it. The only thing that I was looking forward to, was watching blue-ray movies on the laptop, but it seems that it is not worthy on this particular notebook?

Oh well…..another School year with my trusty D810.

One more thing before I tell big mama to send it. :)

It will have a German operating system, which is no problem. But I would dual boot it using XP. Would I have to have a German version of XP, or would my US version be ok? Just asking….cause I can have her ship me a German copy if it’s a must, thanks!

There is something that might be in the realm of possibility. I know I will like the Acer, but do you think it would be asking too much of oma to send me a laptop with these specs?

17” WXGA High Definition BrightView Display
    Intel Core 2 Dou P8400
    4096 MB DDR2
640 GB Hard drives (2x320 GB)
NVIDIA Geforce 9600M GT 512 MB
Blue-ray DVD Lightscribe Super – Multi DVD
    Built-in Digital TV Tuner
    Webcam
    USB x3
    5 in 1 Reader
    HDMI/HDCP

It would be more of a Desktop than Laptop, but would it be worth it? I did say it was for School, and I don’t think 17” notebooks are for School….IMHO

Specs are cool. Better than 5920G . i think it's not the perfect notebook for school.

    bigspin??

Do you think the 5920G would be perfect for School? If there are problems with the notebook, would it be due to user error or would someone that’s notebook savvy have their way with it? I guess I mean would stability be the issue of the OS, and if its heat related…would taking the notebook apart and applying the AS5 be the work around? Now if it’s just an issue of the motherboard, then there’s no work around and the notebook is just crap IMHO!

Sorry for so many questions, I just like to know what to expect and not carry on a rant if it is crap and got it anyway.

I think @bigspin said that because of the size(17"). It's pretty big to carry around :)

I got that part, which is also my opinion on 17” notebooks. But the reason why I’m asking him about the 5920G being good for School would be more on the level of reliability. I would hate to have a notebook, and not know what’s going to happen when I hit the power button. I know exactly what to expect when I turn on my D810, and that’s why it’s my favorite notebook. But if my grandma wants to send me something else for School, without me needing to buy extra batteries for the D810…I’m all for it!

    5920G is better for school.

BTW I have 5920G since May 07 & no problems for me . You can apply AS5 yourself & search the forum for more info. Vista have issues related to drivers ,but most of them solved by acer.

OK….oma set an amount she will not go over LOL! So the notebook with the 9650GT is definitely out!

There is one more Acer that is in her price range, and it might be the best of both worlds as far as portability and performance. So here are the two choices, which is more than I can expect seeing I’m not paying for them.
