    Hi

Just bought the 5920g bluetooth version from comet, got it price matched with laptopsdirect for 769.97.
Was going to buy an intel turbo memory card with my savings and install this with the help of you guys/girls on this forum.

Anyway to my problem, bought the machine yesterday, worked fine for a few hours, created a factory default set of recovery disks ( is this correct?), then started to download certain free applications from the net wirelessly (firefox etc.... ).

After about 3 hours of surfing the net i updated using windows update and rebooted my machine.
Now every time i'm on the internet the wireless card keeps shutting down and restarting, ie; keeps disconnecting and reconnecting.
This is when i noticed that the wireless button is now always flickering on and off.

Has anyone else had this problem after updating or even some helpful advice to give before i think about returning my machine.

    Thanks

    Vista again.
i used the windows zero config at first but like you said it kept dropping the connection.i downloaded the broadcom software which is written for my wifi card and disabled WZC in services.its been trouble free for three months now.
only thing that happens is i still get the small screen with that stupid yellow ball in system tray.
find the software for your WiFi card and try using that.

    thanks for the replies,

hey hoggie, the broadcom drivers your talking about, aren't they for the wired ethernet connection?

anyway thanks for replying guys, i sorted the problem by rolling back the updates and doing a system restore.
This morning everything seems to be working fine

One other quick question about the wifi button, mine is now lighted up 99% of the time, when it flickers once every 5 mins or so, what does this signify? Is it that its losing a signal and re-finding it?

When I'm just browsing the internet, it stays on 99% of the time. I flickers (1 second intervals) when I'm downloading. I thinks it just depends on the traffic.

had the same problem again this afternoon, dont know why but as soon as window updates this problem occurs again.
What I forgot to mention in my last post on this thread is that I have to disable the wifi device in device manager, reboot my machine and then enable the device again.

At present I'm completly disallowing any updates from windows, and my machine is working perfectly. Before i disabled the wifi adaptor, i again rolled back the updates and done a system restore, but this did'nt achieve anything until i disabled the device, rebooted and enabled the device again.

So in effect, I do not at present know if its a particular update thats causing the problem or just the process of updating.
Tommorow i will maybe try updating my machine, seeing if the same problem occurs, and if so, just trying to disable the adaptor, rebooting and enabling, without the actual rolling back of the updates as a solution.

    Will post my results here.

Well it's not like it's losing it's connection. Just when it is loading a page or downloading it's going off for half a second and then back on for half a second, and so on. Just as long as there is traffic. So when I load a page it only goes of and on 1 time, but when I'm downloading it keeps going on and of. But I never loos my connection. I think it's just an indicator that there is traffic from my computer to the internet or back.

    hi people,
    the
Took the laptop back to comet today who exchanged it for a new one.
After talking to Acer over the phone, they diagnosed a hardware problem with the machine, and isssued me with an RMA number that allows for an exchange or refund at the place of purchase.

Anyway after all my posturing about updates and the like, I found that in the end, the real problem was that if the power supply was plugged in, the wifi connection remained stable for as long as needed. With the cable unplugged from the back of the machine the connection kept disconnecting and reconnecting to the wifi router.

So took it back too comet, brought back a brand new laptop, booted her up and guess what?

When unplugged from a power supply the connection problems started again.
So at present I'm not too sure what to do, I love the machine, everythings works fine apart from this one problem.

Has anyone else experienced this particular problem?

sounds like windows is closing it down to save battery time. so there must be a power setting some where that can be switched off.

just need to find it :(

I think I know what the problem is.

When you disconnect your power supply, if you are in power saver mode or perhaps balanced mode, the wireless strength of the antenna is diminished.
Try switching to high performance mode and use the wireless with and without power supply.
For that, click on the battery icon on your system tray (next to the clock at the bottom right of your screen) and select high performance.
If you still have problems then try updating the wireless driver

I am not sure what you people are talking about here about the Broadcom Driver as this is for normal wired networking and has nothing to do with the wireless LAN.

As far as I know there are only two wireless models for the 5920G which are:
    Intel® Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
    and
    Intel® Wireless WiFi Link 3965ABG

The 4965AGN link for the latest driver is:
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2753&lang=eng

    The 3965ABG link is:
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2259&lang=eng

In case I misunderstood what you people were talking about the broadcom drivers, this is the link for the driver which I think is the one for the 5920g I am not sure though:
    http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethernet_nic/netlink.php

Try searching this webpage for the right one:
    http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethernet_nic/downloaddrivers.php

P.S.: As hoggie mentioned, when the wireless button of your laptop blinks, it means that there is traffic in/out of your computer and that is good, you want that.

    hi guys,

theres no need panic and download new bios and firmware settings.

just go to Control Panel\System and Maintenance\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings

click advanced settings - wireless adapter settings - click the little i - change both the power saving modes to maximum performance & click apply.

Your wi-fi should now not drop out when laptop is running on battery only.

    bingo!
    and the prize goes too......Deegame!.

I managed to figure this out on Friday but did not have time to post.

Did you figure this out yourself or were you instructed?

I talked to 6 different Acer support guys who although mostly helpful, could not figure this one out. I actually had to exchange my first laptop, because they thought it was a hardware problem, after getting the new laptop the second guy told me that it was definetly a software problem and to disable both eNet management and also power management in services. The third guy told me it was my wifi routers problem, and when i explained to him that it worked when plugged into the mains he had no answer but insisted i call the router manufacturer to confirm this.

Anyway I figured this problem out on friday and what a simple solution it is, when you know the answer, so much for acer technical support.

I actually feel quite sorry for my first laptop, that will probably be scrapped or sold on cheaply to someone else who would not have appreciated it as fully as me.

    Anyway thanks for helping people.

Yes i found it myself after a pain staking search through the vista control panel.

i knew it was some kind of power management setting but just took a while to find it.

    Anyway wheres my prize :D
