I've recently bought an aspire 5920g with the nvidia 8600m gt graphics card. I can't seem to get any output from the s-video port. I'm using it with s-video cable -> RCA cable -> scart -> TV. This setup works for my desktop's graphics card but with the 5920g it won't detect any second display at all. I've tried using the windows display properties to enable the second display and the nvidia utility but neither work.

Acer support haven't been much help and are just telling me to return the unit to them as they seem fairly sure that it is a hardware fault. Problem is that if it is not a harware fault then they will charge me nearly £40.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? Any ideas for determining whether the port is faulty or if it's something else? I'm using the default drivers that came with the laptop.

I don't really want to mess with the vga bios in case I invalidate my warranty. I will almost certainly be sending the laptop into acer because it is probably a hardware fault with the port. However I just want to make sure that it isn't just a software issue.

If I reset the laptop to factory settings using the recovery disc can I then install the up to date official nvidia drivers? How do I do this?

Also has anyone heard of this problem with the 5920g before?

I have had the same problem ( and still have, I just stopped trying to fix it!!)

I am doing exactly the same thing as you, (i.e. using it with s-video cable(7pin) -> RCA cable -> scart -> TV) and it does not even detect the signal.

I tried with two different s-video cable to RCA converters with no success.

The bizarre thing is that when I use the s-video (4-pin) -> scart -> TV combination (i.e. without the s-video converter) it works!! However I get black and white and a bit fuzzy image (not ideal)

I have tried with factory default driver, 158.45, 163.44 and 163.69.

I have the latest laptop bios - 3708

I finally gave up trying to fix this now that I moved away from home to university accomodation.

If someone comes up with a solution, it will be much helpful for the future.

I have managed to fix the problem now (no thanks to acer). Here's what I did...

4 pin s-video cable from laptop to a scart adapter (purchased from tesco http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.100-7632.aspx) straight into the back of my tv scart socket. This appeared as black and white initially (on AV2) but my tv has a feature to change to svhs video (called AV2S) which displays in colour. I'm afraid this only works when you have a svhs compatable tv scart socket.

It appears as though converting the signal from s-video to composite and then to scart does not work with this laptop. No idea why I'm afraid.

    Thanks for the reply rufusio.
Unfortunatly my tv does not have this AV2S feature so I will probably have to buy a new TV for this to work
