    Hello everyone,

Here is my problem. A few weeks ago I opened up my Acer Aspire 5920G to clean it. I did a full disassembly, taking everything out (HDD, RAM, GPU, HeatSink, keyboard, case) until it was only the motherboard left. It also out of curiosity to see how everything is connected and stuff, but also for cleaning purposes. I put everything back together but a weird thing started happening. After I press the power button, the laptop restarts itself 4 times before loading the Acer logo. So I press the power button, after 2 secs it shuts down (all the blue-leds are turned off and the fan stops working), after 2 secs it starts by itself then again in 2 secs it switches off an does this 4 times. Always 4 times. After the 4th restart, it loads as usual, you can see the Acer welcome screen then the GRUB loads (I have dual boot Ubuntu + Windows 7).

Then I noticed that if I put it to sleep or hibernate, it just shuts down and when I try to power it on, the 4 restarts happen again. Basically I cannot put the laptop to sleep in Windows or Ubuntu. Same thing happens on battery or AC plugged in.

So I disassembled it again, trying to figure out the problem. Nothing looks suspicious. I tried pulling out the GPU, HDD, other boards and the same result. When I pulled out both RAMs it did not restart itself but it didn't even start at all. At least I could not see anything on the screen, but the fans are running and the blue-leds are on. I'm not sure if this is normal behavior maybe because BIOS cannot load. I did a MemTest and everything turned out ok. I also updated the BIOS to the latest version and still the same symptoms.
I am out of ideas, I know it must be something I did when cleaning it but I cannot see what. I also do not want to take it to a repair shop because it need to work on it and I think I can fix it myself.

Does anyone have any suggestions ?
PS:The laptop works normally after the 4 restarts, the OSs have no problems.

    Thanks in advance !

IIRC, the modem is on the top of the mainboard, left hand side. You will see the restarting symptoms if your forgot to plug in the modem or the modem has failed.

I have only one thing to say: YOU ARE A GENIUS !!

Now I am going to add some more things :)
It was indeed the modem. I disassembled everything, took out the modem, analyzed from all the possible angles, concluded I had no idea if it is working or not so I just plugged it back in, making sure to push the pin to the max. After assembling everything back, voila. The laptop started normally and sleep works again ! Thanks a million, I now rest easy that my laptop is not going to die pretty soon on me :D

So thanks again Techiediva, you saved me a lot of trouble !

I have acer 5920 laptop and also facing the same problem. But im my case this problem my machine is restarting 5 times before boot and this problem occurred while upgrading the sound driver. After upgrading the drivers when I restarted the machine then I took 5 restarts. I tried as much as I could, I reinstalled sounder drivers, formatted & reinstalled windows & flashed BIOS also. But nothing happened to be good. Now I installed windows 8. Even then the same problem is persisting. If it is a problem as what is discussed above in reference to Modem, will it work If I do the same..? please help me for this..
