HI Folks!!!
I am hoping i am able to replace my video card in my 5920g.
I believe it is MXM2 and as such can be replaced.
The current card is the nvidia 8600m-gs and I'm very much afraid it isn't going to last very long, i bought this machine to play games (COD4, Bioshockand such), since the 8600 is included in the bad cards list you can see my dilemma.
My questions are,
Can this card be replaced?
If so what can i replace it with other than the 8 series nvidias?
How difficult would it be to replace? I'm not afraid to open it up and i've done a bit of work on other systems.
Thanks
Frank

I don't think it's possible...
My 5920G has a 8600m GT and I've asked the people in Acer service center. They said that the GPU can't be replaced... -___-" -
Well, not considering module availability, BIOS Support and heat-sink mods, you can install anything upto a 9650M GT.
-
I found the service manual for my aspire 7720 and followed the instructions to remove the 8400M GS card and replaced it with an Acer 8600M GT card I bought off ebay from a guy in China. I chose the 8600M GT because it was the fastest card I could find and was actually available in other models of the 7720. I plugged it in and it rebooted successfully on the first try and I did not need to flash the vbios or use special drivers.
Before you decide on what card you should upgrade to, you should find out what you can actually get. I couldn't find anything more powerful then the 8600m GT that I could actually afford. -
I think 8600GT is the best you can upgrade your notebook to. So it's kinda pointless..
-
Acer-made 9600M GTs have yet to really enter the secondary market, so hold off on the upgrade.
-
You may have to just upgrade and get a new model.
-
If the slot in MXM2, it should be possible to upgrade up to 9650m GT gpu.
Although, for now I would wait.
If your gpu is behaving itself for the most part, then wait it out a bit more until 9600m GT becomes more widespread and it's prices drop.
It's not easy to find those gpu's right now, and they can get rather expensive.
Upgrading to 8600m GT is not really a good idea given the fact it's still the same 8xxx series prone to potential failures.
If you will want to upgrade the gpu, consult with Acer first and foremost ... and if they say 'no' ask them in detail as to why not.
Also consult with others on this situation.
Alternatively ... you can get a new laptop. -
OK, I did find some links to buy the 9600M GT OR the 9650M GT...but the prices sure ain't pretty.
$450USD for a 9600M GT?
Almost a THOUSAND for the 9650M GT?! -
thanks for all the input folks.
I think i'll wait a bit and see how things go, this machine is only 6 months old and i really like it but not enough to spend $500 on a vid card.
Does anyone know if the card is soldered to the mobo or is there a slot for it?
Thanks again,
Frank -
There is a slot - that's what we've been talking about!
MXM is a form factor standard created by Nvidia that allows for video cards to be swapped on the same motherboard.
There are about five different sizes and thermal limits defined within MXM - I (think 8400M GS), II (8600M GT), III (8700M GT), IV, and HE.
The 5920G has an MXM-II slot, which means it can accept MXM-I or MXM-II cards. -
Thanks for clarifying

is this site ships to turkey?

Once it leaves our site you must bear the consequences as we have done what we can to test the card to make sure it works.
