    hello all
i migrated from the confused hardware forum to here[ ;)] after deciding on this 4501 lappie @ 1404dollars shipped.
lets see how it goes from here
is there any good suggestion of a IN-STOCK laptop sleeve?
everyone says shinza rocks but it is out of stock.
also, i already have a Samsonite 400 from the samsonite site- it wont load completely, but www.samsonite.com and then click on singapore and then goto backpack and then goto page2..(won it at a contest in singapore)
but it is the NON-laptop model ie same as the new samsonite laptop range but no laptop carrier, hence just need a slip on case/cover
    tips?
also, i just ordered a usb drive, what else do you think i need for the lappie
    thanks bye
    shr
EDIT TO ADD: it just arrived and is a beauty!!!
    more later

WHy did you go for the 4500 series when you can get the new Folio latchles design in the 4000 series for a similar/lower price? Kindly explain

The 4501 has better specs then the 4000 series. It has similar specs as the aspire 2012WLMi. Dular DVD drive, XP Pro, ATI 9700 64MB, and I think some other stuff but i can't remember. Check the 4501 forums. Also the 4501 does have the folio design, it looks exactly the same as the 1681, and the 4000 series.

    The difference is:
    4501:
    Dothan
    better graphics ATI 9700 64MB
    DVD +/-RW
    XP Pro
so the 4501 is better than the 4000

btw: 4000series is shared video. also, acer with wide screen and ati9700 are only three-four series: 1680, 4500, 2003/2/whatever very pricey

i did not even know about it and it was for pricing, i wanted a radeon 9700 for less than 1400USD and i did get it.
hence i bought it. also, in usa, this and the 1681 are the only two good models in good pricing available.

for notebook sleeves, i use a 15" booq powersleeve for my 2012 and it fits nice and snug.

    http://www.booqbags.com/Search.bok?category=Laptop%20Sleeves

it also fits nicely into a backpack.

    good luck

I don't think the Acer laptops with the 9700 graphics are expensive- I did extensive research before I bought mine from Newegg. Comparable laptops from HP/Compaq, IBM, Sager, Winbook, Sony, Toshiba, Dell, Gateway and Fujitsu were all more expensive.

I consider the Acer lineup a great value and am very happy with my 1662WLMi.

wow so you ordered from page computers??
i was scared after reading the number of bait and switch reports on reseller ratings, i didnt go for the 60bucks saved vis-a-vis newegg since I wanted assurance. if you had got it, i would have got this deal at page, just am chicken to try it[ :p]
oh well, this is good enough and i got a free beach towel -- woohoooo....... [ ;)]
hope it comes with a free mistakenly given laptop bag!!!

    hi shr,

yeah, the booq sleeve may seem a little pricey (especially under the post-purchase circumstances), but it is pure function. It feels really well padded and up to the task it sets out to do-- protect your baby! I'm not sure i'd truse a 10-20 dollar sleeve unless i made it myself. that said, it depends if you plan to use it standalone, or as an accessory to another accessory :)

    cheers

    addon comments
4way scroll is great but not the reason i bought this. i got this since i like the graphics, the processor and power, the low weight, the brand reliablitiy.
after i got it i am pleased with the keyboard, the display and the awesome location of ports and all has impressed me.
another big gaffe by hp is the HUGE 1.5lb adaptor-- the acer one is slim and trim.. i am dissapointed with lack of scroll as in my roomates hp. also the speakers are good but no where near harmon kardons on his amd64 notebook. but that is 2lb heavier and 2.5hrsless battery so i dont regret my decision.
It is huge and difficult to weild with a hand- expected of a widescreen notebook!
am still noT finding a good bag and i dont want to risk online purchase since i am confused about sizing and all (for sleeve) and i already have a samsonite backpack bag but witthout the notebook sleeve hence need something to hold the notebook in place within the backpack.

Acer 4501== laptop that kicks the llamas ass.
    I LOVE THIS LAPTOP!! :) :)

i was just wondering if the 4501 has all the usual connections on the back cos ive seen a picture of it where its got the docking thing attached to it and it looks as though it hasnt got any ports on the actual unit except for the docking thing. so has it got all the connections on the back of it? actually have you got a digital camera so you could take some pics of it cos im really interested in getting one and id like to see some pics [ :)]

    hey there
it is a beautiful laptop see it and you will know
it has a latch so what?
it is folio but because it is widerscreen and for protection they have a latch. i mean have you seen the acer link i have posted twice on this forum and venom has posted too ? that will show you the true class of this. compare this to the hp/ the dells and you will see the build quality.
just a suggestion- please observe and read everything there is on trhe site before you say -"pictures on prozzergs are not folio"
please goto the acer virtual tour site we have on this page and REREAD it.
    more later
*ADD* this laptop is folio design and if you read acer official press release about folio- it is the executive loook and not one stupid latch which defines the folio. also, the positioning of the ports, the four way scroll and the dergree tilt keyboard.

Done all this and more long ago. those pictures are not the Folio. The folio, in case you havent seen it, does NOT have latches and is thinner. It is bY DEFINITION a latchless design. whats posted is not that...perhaps you have something different which is not what the pictures suggest.

sorry to say it but you are so very wrong!!
The 4500 (4501wlmi) IS folio designed:
Quote from Acers Travelmate 4500 product page (http://global.acer.com/products/notebook/tm4500.htm)
"Acer's innovative Folio design features sleek lines, sculpted edges, and stylish metallic colours -- exuding a personal yet professional feel."
The model you are refering to is the TravelMate 3200 (with the latchless design), but it is not the latchless design that dictates the folio design. Have a look at the Aspire 1680 series... no latchless design but indeed folio design!!!

If you are still not convinced check thissites out:

    guys
thanks for the postings. All I meant was that the 4501 doesnt look all that sleek in the pictures! I didnt for a moment think that you hadnt got that machine! apologies for any unintended offence.

SO as i understand 4501 is FOlio with latches and 3201 is folio without latches! That settles it!

A full review would be greatly appreciated

well then, great that we sorted that out.
now with regards to the full review. I dont know enough about lappies to do one, but i am planning to reformat and install ntfs and remove all old partitions and make it a self customised windows and important progs on one and games+etc crap on the other one.
any tips on what all to do for this and how to maintain ORDER in the HDD after a year or two?
    thanks all!
athreya- i would be happy to address any other questions you have.
I recommend this laptop though i confess i ahve not yet taken it out of the house since i am waiting for HENRY to comment on the shinza and whether it fits [ ;)] then i will buy it--

Are you completely sure it does have a Bluetooth? I know it does have a Bluetooth button, but I`m just not sure Bluetooth module is inside. Can you please look at Device Manager in Control Panel and see is there any Bluetooth device/adapter?

    Thanks in advance!

Prozzerg's system was from Sweden (I think), so the units and Europe may have the Bluetooth built-in. Just like their HDD is 60GB compared to the US/Canada's 40GB HDD.

sorry for the big missunderstanding from my side, my laptop does NOT have bluetooth.

athreya and all you others, i will try to write a full review of it as soon as i have some time over, i have alot to do at the moment, university studies is hard some times ;)

but when i do the review, i will fire up the laptop with some good benchmarking stuff, like sysmark 2002, 3d mark 2001 and 2003, sisoft sandra and some other, if you have any tools that you want me to test with, just drop me a line.
