Let me preface this by saying that I know nothing about linux.. I just installed Mint 10 on my current laptop last night (3820tg should be here soon) to play around with and I fell in love.. so I'm wondering if there are any issues people have had with running Ubuntu or Mint on the tg because I would like to dual boot it with win7 and use windows mainly for gaming and linux for everything else.

What I'm worried about is the ATI card, from the little I know they don't seem to work as well in linux as nvidias, is this true? I watch a lot of HD content so this is really important to me. Will I be able to get HDMI out to work? My current laptop has an ATI card and videos were stuttering a lot.

Any advice on this or anything else I should know about before messing around more with linux on my new machine would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

nope no issues with it here. As for the video card, Nvidia screwed the pooch with Linux compaability lately ..... we CANT use any laptop with Optimus graphics tech and use the dedicated GPU, and other fun driver issues.

all I can reccomend is to folow the ATI driver information here on NBR and the guys and gals will all help you if you have any problems

You can't use discrete? Have you tried ASUSM51Ta & Linux: Enjoy Hybrid Graphics with switcheroo? I'd suggest doing a bit more research...

please read my post, I said that the ATI wont be an issue but any laptops with Nvidia WILL. the OP had concerns that ATI was not god for Linux

Nvidia screwed the pooch with Linux compaability lately ..... we CANT use any laptop with Optimus graphics tech and use the dedicated GPU, and other fun driver issues.

I use switcheroo and others regularly

Yes, I correctly understood you. I am pretty sure I read somewhere that switcheroo also works for Nvidia, which is what I was trying to say in my post above. Even though I am kind of a bit of Nvidia fanboy I am glad I have ATI in my 3820TG as I have no problems with it in Linux.

switcheroo doesn not work correctly with Nvidia ..... yet. and Most of us are pretty ticked Nvidia just left the Linux community hangng here.

I have been trying to get it runnng on an asus laptop and an M11x for months now with the crew. but there are quite a few shortcuts Nvidia took making our lifes tougher .... for now
