What laptop do you have? I've gone from 5.1 to 2.1 for gaming myself. I'm using an old creative 5.1 system running in 2.1 now, have always sounded fantastic. I like the Bose 2.1 system, but not the cheapest.

I have the Klipsch Promedia 2.0's.
Very clear and the base can resync your heartbeat if you want it to.

I have the Creative I-Trique 3400's, and they are pretty good. They lack dedicated midrange, but the sub makes up for it a bit. I'd see if you can listen to them in a store first and hear them for yourself. It depends what you are going to do with them, but I'd reccommend getting some with a dedicated midrange. Hope this helps...

Logitech is the best brand and product for speakers there.

How about Harman/Kardon they are #1.

EDIT: oh, just read <100, sorry

logitech if you want best price/performance. Klipsch if you want the best sound. yes you can also hook up 5.1 to your laptop. i use a creative live external usb sound card to do this. i have it paired with the logitech 5300z 5.1 speakers which you can find under 100 easily these days.

For under $100, I'd go with the Logitech X-230. Not sure how much the price is in Canada (even though they're basically equal now), but the X-230 can be had for about 50+shipping.

out of those three i would definitely go for the Altec Lansings. my friend has that model but in silver, i didnt know they have a black version. it looks very "VIP". the bass can be a little over powering but the mids are neutral and highs are sweet and light but carries presence.

my other friends have the X230's and x530's and they blow. and blow very hard. that pathetic annoying Pressure woofer resonates at 60hz and it can get incredibly fatiguing. even with that little technology thing between the two drivers in the satellite speakers, they still sound very muted and a lot more is desired to be heard.

i've owned multiple altec lansing models(two AVS 300[2.1], ADA106[4.1 HT], and the 251[2.1]) and they've lasted years. they were robust and sounded great for 50 dollars. we still own the ADA106 but i tore apart the two AVS300's and gave away the 251's. i've always covered my ears at the logitech X series.
my father bought a z640 and its just bad.-the bass is horrific and leaks the higher end mid bass and the puny 2 inch 7 watt satellites are torcher to listen to.

they remade the X series but i dont expect much to change.
