This depends on what type of protection you want.

If you are looking for something to keep your laptop protected while it's in your bag (to protect against scratches & dents from other items also in the bag), get a laptop sleeve.

If you are looking for protection while the laptop is outside of the bag, look into hardshell laptop cases. The idea is very similar to smartphone cases. But, it makes your laptop bulky and ugly.

If you are looking for protection against light scratches & fingerprints, and also giving your laptop a new look, get a D-Brand skin. They are essentially precision-cut vinyl sheets that are exactly cut to the dimensions & shape of your laptop.

If you're looking for a laptop bag to carry the laptop (and related accessories), it doesn't really matter what you buy, as long as it's from a reputable well-known manufacturer with a good warranty. The reason I say it doesn't matter is because it all depends on your budget, desired style (backpack or shoulder bag), desired size, desired accessory pockets, desired material, color, and buying preference (retail or online).

If you're looking for a laptop bag, I'd recommend you check out two places... A retail electronics store that sells laptops (e.g. MicroCenter, Fry's, Best buy, etc), and a store in your local mall that specializes in luggage for travelers. Both types of stores will have laptop bags of all shapes and sizes. And those two stores will carry major brands from different companies. A store like Best buy will carry bags from companies that specialize in computer-related accessories (Belkin, Targus, etc). The luggage store will carry brands that specialize in making bags & luggage (Samsonite, Delsey, American Tourister, Tumi, etc). Pick a bag design & style you want, and either buy it on the spot, or go home and shop online now that you know what type of bag you want.

BTW, personally I switch between should bags and backpacks from a luggage manufacturer. I trust my bag to be made by companies that specialize in making bags, rather than buying a bag from a company that specialize in making mice and power adapters.

I use these sleeves to protect my laptops while carrying them in my backpack:

A lot of people here swear by Everki, give them a look. But what you want might depend on what you're protecting it from.
