so i will be ordering a sager np2096 soon and i will definitely be getting a laptop cooler along with it. i just wanted to know, how do tell if vents are intake or exhaust?

also if anyone has already seen the vent configuration of the np2096, what cooler would you recommend getting?

Im a noob at this, but chances are, if you have an exhaust vent on the side of your notebook, the ones under it will be intake. Anyone correct me if im wrong.

Lol, I can already tell you which coolers will be recommended:
    Zalman NC1000/NC2000
    Notepal Infinite
    NZXT Cryo LX

don't waste your money on a notebook cooler... just elevate the back of the laptop 2 inches by putting something under it... It'll drop the temps by like 10 degrees Celsius, or more. in fact, many notebook coolers drop the temp because of this. If your car was overheating would you strap a huge fan to the side of it? no... you'd figure out why it was overheating, and fix the problem. Like a car, a laptop is meant to keep its temperature, without any aid from external fans, ect.

10C or more? Please dont pass on misinformation.

The only way it would lower by 10C or more is if you have a huge external fan blowing right at it from the back (hoping your exhaust vents arent in the back). In which case you have to ask, whats the electricity bill gunna be of that fan?

While he is right that for some a notebook cooler will be just a waste of money - no matter how expensive you get, it will still only do 2-4C. But for some a notebook cooler can drop temps ranging from 5-15C. It all depends on your notebook.

I don't pass on misinformation... I tell of experience with my personal laptop in my sig.
This method is especially true if ur using ur laptop on a soft surface (a bed, couch, ect.)... Elevating it then will let the fans do their job, rather than having em fail to push enough air out the back.

a 10C drop by lifting your laptop 2 inches from the back?
Mine did not do NEAR that much.

He pretty much has it bang on its all on the notebook, some will get better results then others.

For your set up most of the vents appear to be closer to the front, which would = Zalman nc2000 or if you could go the route of the NZXT Cryo

Remember you could also look at cooling central for many other cooling tips like undervolting, fan cleaning etc

Was yours originally on a soft surface?

(My laptop normally idles at 70 Celcius, with the back elevated.) I was at 80 or so without it elevated (on a soft surface of course). Dual 8800M GTX produce quite a bit of heat... :p

I have a hard time visualizing it when people say "elevate the back." Can anyone post a picture of what they mean? Thanks!

yur analogy is way off. every car has fans that will kick in at a certain temp just like a laptop is programed to do. u cannot compare a fan setup in a car to a laptop simply cuz the car has lots of other things that further aid in coolin.

another HUGE difference between a car's intake system and a laptop is that a car is traveling at a certain amount of speed. air is rushed straight into the car. if yur analogy was true, then i take it u'r runnin around in circles while usin yur laptop huh? have u ever seen cars bein dyno'd? every dyno u will EVER see, will have huge fans supplyin air straight into the car's intake system cuz the car is at a stand still.

by raising the back up, the laptop has an easier access to air flow so that it can supply more air and can disperse its hot air more easily.

edit: @ captain picard: some people just tape together some coins and set the hind "feet" on top of the coins. anything similar to the coin setup should work fine. just make sure whatever u'r usin isn't blockin any of yur vents/fans/exhaust.

@ itomix: u said yur notebook was idling at 80c on SOFT SURFACE. well whodathunkit...*shakes head*

You sorta missed the point. The point of the analogy is that if a car was overheating, you woulden't just strap on another cooling device... It should work properly without it. Instead of wasting money strapping on more and more things, one should diagnose the problem.

it was just a bad analogy.

u CANNOT sit in yur driveway and rev yur engine for long periods of time. yur car will overheat and/or blow somethin. have u ever seen a car bein dyno tuned *without* external fan(s)?

i see where u'r tryin to go with yur analogy, but different notebooks will have diff coolin capabilities. some notebooks have great cooling capabilities while others are lacking. i just don't like people bein misinformed.

I usually put 2 cd cases under each side of my laptop to elevate it, and it works quite well. Mine is a 13 inch, so depending on the size of your laptop, you might want to add more.

i guess the important point is to use something sturdy, and make sure it stays sturdy when you're typing on it.

i would definitely show you a pic, had i not get my laptop drunk last week =(
