I just received my Zalman NC 1000 to cooldown my dv5t but still after playing an hours or so of Fallout 3 the graphic card reaches 85C with the cooler at max? Any idea why? Everything else if really cool. The cpu does go over 65C ...

    are the vents cleaned out?

85C for a videocard is quite normal actually.

CPU temp is pretty good as well.

also, you must factor in the ambient temp of the environment that your notebook is being used in.

in any case, those temps are quite acceptable.

Thats fine. Why do you think thats too hot. Is it causing the game to run slower? no. Its fine.

Make sure that most of the laptop vents are being hit, especially the fan. Align the notebooks vents with the vent area on the Zalman

    +1!

If the notebook overhangs on the bottom of the cooler a little bit, this is okay as long as the vents are lining up.

I've noticed on my Vostro 1510, that idle/normal usage temps decrease DRAMATICALLY with the Zalman NC1000. However when gaming, my temps are pretty much the same as if I weren't using a cooler.

If I idle my laptop for an hour on a Zalman, my CPU goes down to about 22-25c and my GPU ~46c

Idle temps w/o cooler are cpu 39c, gpu 60c

When gaming, CPU jumps to ~37c and vid card to ~60c

Wow, the 8400 GPU runs hot. My 9600 idles around 40-46C.

You cannot expect 60-70 temps even with a cooler. But,the cooler can bring down the idle temperatures by a good margin...like my Belkin wavy cooler..my GPU now idles at 45-48 as opposed to 59-63 without it..
Try to align the fan just below the place where it sucks air and you will surely notice the difference(thanks to NBR cooling central).
Btw,what speed does the NC1000 fan run at(in RPM)?
My Belkin cooler has only one fan in the centre, but its super effective as it runs at 3000RPM...

    8400m is 85nm process

    9600 is 65nm process I believe.

Thats why the temps differ so much.

I have move the notebook down on the cooler so the cooler air flow will be closer to all the notebook holes. Did not run any test directly, but I did overclock the 9600 GT and retest fallout 3 for a couple of hours with cooler and get the temp max at 63C. Huge difference from the 84C before...

    So to sum up:
    The proc is undervolt
    The GC 9600 GT overclock
    Zalman NC1000 aligned
    ----> temperature really cool: 63C
